Scunthorpe United vs Needham Market this evening 19:42 - Jan 28 with 2435 viewsMiaow

We were playing Scunthorpe as recently as 2011.

Surely a home win tonight but hopefully Needham can do enough to stay up, and I would like to see Scunthorpe get promoted this year as their fans have suffered quite a bit in recent seasons.

About 1700 Scunny fans turned up at Farsley last at season. Not bad for National League North. With one or two exceptions a decent, long suffering bunch.

7 teams in National League North who were Football League teams in my lifetime, albeit some are phoenix clubs: Chester, Kidderminster, Scunthorpe, Darlington, Hereford, Scarborough and Southport.

Remember seeing Ian Rush play for Chester at PR (about 1980 ish ?)

Two in the South: Torquay, Maidstone

Shows how easy it is for it all to unravel with careless ownership/management, although some were never really geared up for League status.

Town v Scunthorpe was my son's 1st Ipswich game, he remembers it well!
March 2011 - he was 6.
2-0 win, Carols Edwards & Jimmy Bullard :-)

I went there in September 2010 as we drew 1-1. On the bench for us that day was Reggie Lambe who started for Needham last night

If memory serves it was a certain Connor Wickham who scored a stoppage time winner against them at home in one of his first few games.

I’ve rarely cheered a goal more heartily. Nigel Adkins had them time wasting right from kick-off.

Scunthorpe as you suggest was of course a much more established league club than most of those, and spent much more time higher up the pyramid. I was talking to some Doncaster fans the other day, and they really miss having Scunthorpe around. And I think there is something specially sad about Scunthorpe, as I'm not sure it's only about careless management, - but also about the decline of heavy industry in the town, with very little money splashing around there nowadays.

I remember going to Chester years ago, with a friend. She felt ill, but we weren't allowed to leave the ground (away end) early. I've still never figured out why not, - did the police think we were going to ambush the Sealand Road faithful? It wasn't just before the end of the game either, more like just after half-time. This was the golden age of football hooliganism, but I can't say she looked the type.

Josh Carson’s debut I believe?

Scunthorpe was a tough old town, when I started scootering their lot, The Pathfinders, already had a National reputation! Scary bunch!

I had a similar experience to your friend at The Goldstone Ground Brighton. The toilets were just behind the terrace, I had the shlts but the old bill wouldn't let me off the terrace to service that need.

Wnkers.

I am now inclined to join riots so that I can get my own back.

A friend of mine was working on the Scunthorpe Evening Telegraph & i went to a party he hosted in 1982. It got a little lively after chucking-out time at Tiffanys nightclub when it seemed that most of the attendees, many of whom were welders, descended upon the party.
