Just a crazy move. on 17:40 - Jan 30 with 2722 views | SamWhiteUK | He's only 21 and he doesn't have to stay there forever. I understand it's an odd move, but if he can maintain fitness he'll find another club somewhere after lining his pockets nicely.
Just a crazy move. on 17:42 - Jan 30 with 2681 views | mutters | Every person chases their owns dreams, some dream of numerous titles and medals, some dream of earning generational wealth that can improve not only his but his family's life. If he goes to Al-Nassr he will get a chance to play with Ronaldo, arguably one of the best the players of all time. Everybody is different, who is it for us to say what he should go shouldn't do? The world of club football is no longer Europe centric.

The place is a graveyard. Meaningless games in front of 4 blokes and their camels. Players go there to top up their pensions. At a club in Europe he would earn millions a years, yet he feels the need to go there and play against 38 year old has beans CBs. It will wreck his career.

Just a crazy move. on 17:48 - Jan 30 with 2609 views | textbackup | These players just give up a career and go for the money. Fair play, but can’t say it would be my idea of what a footballer should be/strive to be

Agree. As a kid he would have been dreaming of playing for some of the top clubs in the world and playing and scoring in the Champions League final. He potentially had that, yet gave it up for a few extra quid that he will never have the time to spend. This move really does turn me off the modern footballer.

Just a crazy move. on 18:03 - Jan 30 with 2464 views | NedPlimpton | The Premier league was hardly the "best league in the world" before the money started getting ridiculous The best foreign players certainly weren't coming to England in their prime back in the mid 90s. Gullit, Zola, Vialli etc were all in their 30s and the likes of Bergkamp and Henry were in and out of their sides before Arsenal resuscitated their careers Yes, the standard of the English players generally was higher but there were only a handful of foreign players in the first year of the prem and it wasn't until the money started rolling in that big name players followed. Don't kid ourselves that overseas players started coming here to test themselves against Colin Hendry! They were coming to line their pockets and nothing else Just like players moving to Saudi are doing now

I would agree with most of what you are saying. My problem is that he has given up playing for one of the best teams in world football for a few extra quid. He would have more wealth that he could ever have dreamt of had he joined a Real, PSG or Munich type of club. He wouldn't be able to spend what he earnt there, let alone what he will be given now. No way would a young Ronaldo/Messi join that league now. They were winners and wanted the trophies with the money.

Let’s face it he will be utterly minted wherever he goes, I mean he would probably be on 2-300k per week at a top European club. It’s ridiculous, why play in a backwater to be slightly more minted.

It’s a bit more than a few extra quid. I’d be all in on that move I think if I’d grown up in Colombia with very little!

That's the point though. He would be on £8M-£10M a year at a club like PSG or Munich. He will have wealth beyond his wildest dreams, but also a career worth shouting about. It's pure greed, not a footballing decision. Stay in Europe and be incredibly wealthy and the chance to win the biggest prizes. Sorry for me, this is potentially a career killing move.

That's definitely one way to look at it The other is that the career of a footballer is very short and could be over incredibly quickly because of injury or falling out of form etc. So make as much money as possibly in as short as time as possible. Duran is hot stuff at the moment but there's been other young strikers that have scored as many as him and then disappeared from the the top leagues quite quickly

It is certainly not a move I would be making if I were him. You can make a fortune and win the biggest prizes, then go to Saudi for the pension top up. Guess some will come from a different angle, but for me, as a footballer, I would be trying to be the best I can be. That ain't in Saudi.

Just a crazy move. on 22:27 - Jan 30 with 1486 views | Axeldalai_lama | I think it's worth noting they pay no tax on their wages in Saudi. So it's not just a bit more, it's probably at least triple in reality. 300k no tax Vs 100k after tax. That changes things from a flash footballers lifestyle living your dream, to everyone in your extended family will never have to work again, foundations, megastar money, rebuild your entire home village or whatever soppy back story he has etc etc. Not sure I'd necessarily follow his route, and he'll probably just buy 100 supercars and a yacht, but I can't say I blame him and can see reasons why he's doing it.

I agree to some extent until you read about his background. Grew up in complete poverty and has the chance to set up probably 10-15 generations for life with the money he'll earn there. That being said of course, I'm sure he's still on a healthy wage here. Main thing is it's a big shame. Top footballer and as others have pointed out, one that could've had a real impact in coming years on the European game - unfortunate that won't be the case but there's always the chance he comes back I guess. Just look at Ivan Toney - do you ever hear his name these days?

the only thing you hear about toney is how much he hasn't been missed and comparisons to mbeumo! more seriously, good article about oscar in the paper a couple of weeks ago, he's left china after 8 years, seems to have enjoyed his life there, but comments about what he's missed with the brazilian national team. seems a waste of a short career...

Just a crazy move. on 07:29 - Jan 31 with 960 views | Vaughan8 | I do always wonder at what level of income, does extra money just become almost meaningless. If you're on say £150k a week, you should be able to Invest/spend you're money so you'll be comfortable for the rest of your life and a few generations. Beyond that, why would you really care? However each to their own.

I suppose it depends on how many people you're supporting with that and to what level. Some players seem to employ half a small town to do their admin, socials, driving etc. Not to mention the healthy percentage the agent's taking.
