No thanks. Sulked when we didn't sell him to Palace. Opted for Saints instead of us in the summer. Now he's had a falling out with their new manager. And he isn't a Premier League midfielder. [Post edited 2 Feb 12:09]

Did I hear somewhere on 12:13 - Feb 2 with 3288 views | DJR | I like the way has changed from when he played with us into a much more attacking midfielder who can drive forward, something we appear to be lacking. Not sure that Southampton would want to sell him to us though. [Post edited 2 Feb 12:14]

I'm not sure how much I would criticise him for those things. What did the "sulking" involve? At that time we were clearly going nowhere positive and Palace were a Premier League side well ahead of us. We have no idea what was offered by both Saints and us. Perhaps he was expected to be first team there and back up here and pitch time attracted him. We don't know. Has he had a falling out with their manager? What over? A desire for them to accept a bid from us that they have turned down when he knows he isn't playing for them? Again, we don't know.

PL midfielders cost 30m, we don't have that. In reality, we will be in the Championship next season so I'd be more than happy with this myself. Need to be building towards next season.

Quite. If you could get it done for under £10m, he'd be the ideal long-term successor to Morsy. And whatever some people may say, he *does* still have an affinity with the club.

It's called respect and decency. He'd already given Martin his word that he'd sign for them if they went up. Despite our best efforts, Flynn stayed loyal to him. Whether we liked that or not, it showed he's a guy with principles.

He’s an obvious Morsy replacement, and Morsy has slowed up big time. Cajuste won’t be here next season, Mass probably a touch too old, Humphrey’s not as experienced. If Downes had never played for us we’d be crowing about signing him.

Did I hear somewhere on 12:43 - Feb 2 with 2897 views | PioneerBlue | I’m a yes on balance if there is a deal to be done and he wants a return, number one he’s a decent midfielder. My view is this; If we are in the business of making incremental improvements then it’s a yes. If we are in the business of considering next season and striking early for championship prep it’s also a yes. Morsy, Taylor and Humphries isn’t a championship level midfield ready to sustain a title / promotion challenge. If we are considering PL next season, it doesn’t really matter, the cost of doing the deal would be insignificant compared with the continued PL cash inflows and still we’d be looking at improving the midfield over and above what we had this season. Do we really see Phillips staying beyond, not sure. Cajuste would presumably be added to the above list but again it would need more pace control and power to sustain PL levels.

Isn't there a clause that means we sign Cajuste if we stay up? Or has relegation been confirmed because we lost to Southampton?

You obviously didn’t see the game. We’re down because we’ve lost the battle in our minds, the team is flat and doesn’t believe. We’re down.

If you could get Downes now and sign Ben Sheaf in the summer, there's your perfect Championship-winning midfield pivot.

Nah, definitely don't want to sign a player that could potentially improve the team because he played for a manager we don't like. Imagine that!

OK. It's a shame we don't have a 2 week break to sort out the mindset and then 14 matches left including playing both of our rivals for safety. A real shame that we are so many points away from safety. Yes, yesterday was disappointing just as West Ham and Everton were. You might have resigned us to the drop but I doubt anyone inside the club has.

Did I hear somewhere on 14:56 - Feb 2 with 2312 views | OldFart71 | Downes hasn't done anything for Saints. He has looked pretty poor. If we are to get anyone in they need to have power and mobility. The ability to surge forward from midfield.

Where he'd been on loan last season. Why wouldn't he stick with what he knew? He's an upgrade on anyone we've got and KM wanted him in the summer so it would be a yes from me

I really do admire your optimism but in reality we’ve had 24 attempts to display a winning mentality and failed in 21 of them so far, with the best of intentions, I don’t see where the turnaround comes.

From the fact our rivals in this have also failed in 19 and 20 of their attempts. It's not like we have to suddenly pull 6 wins from somewhere (as another suggests). We just need to sort ourselves out to win a few (especially if 2 of them are the matches against those rivals). Yes, we do need to improve, though.
