Amazed Woolfie signed a new contract 08:57 - Feb 3 with 2323 viewsAVJones

Not in the team for most of the season.

Dropped twice, when (in lots of peoples opinion) playing well.

Various rumours about wanting to leave to get more regular football.

Free agent in five months time.

Be fascinating to know what sort of clauses there might be in his contract if a good offer came in for him in the summer…

I imagine it was more offered to protect his value. It will have a wage drop on relegation like most contracts.

Pay rise, will have options if Town want to sell him, boyhood club, one injury away from staring prem games etc ...

Of course he wants to stay.

Yeah, his last contract would have been on L1 wages right?

They all have % escalators in their contracts based on promotion/ relegation but it will certainly be more now.

Two injuries. If O'Shea picks up an injury, Godfrey will surely come in ahead of him.

Still expecting him to go out on loan.

He has played mainl yL1 and champ football all his career for his boyhood club.

He now has 8 PL appearances to his name and is a PL player. He will get more appearances.

Why on earth wouldn't he sign a contract with us. Hes playing at the highest level for his boyhood club and been a part of an amazing football journey which is continuing.

Genuinely amazed people thought it so obvious he’d sign.

In his shoes I’d have waited to the summer and seen what happens: what division we are in, who are manager is, have I played again this season etc.

Impressive by Ashton to get him to sign. My guess is he has a low-ish release fee.

Without being too defeatist, our journey has taken a less positive route recently, sadly.

Jeeze, our fans really are defeatist.

It's far from over but I think most realistic fans thought this season would be nothing other than a relegation battle. The PL is a different beast and despite some good signings we still have a big core of players that were playing at L1 level. Mistakes get made, we all have a take on the GK situation but it's impossible to get everything right.

Woolfie is highly unlikley to get a PL offer elsewhere and i think he'd rather play for a Champ club that his his boyhood club and must have a very good chance of being right at the top end 'IF' that's where we find ourselves next year.

That is part of the journey. If anyone just thought we were going to stay up this season, and relegation means the club is in a less positive palace they need a rude awaking as a supporter of ITFC.

Relegation or not the club is in a very very good place and i cannot see why we can't expect plenty of positive times ahead, even it means one step back to go two forward from time to time. I think for some of our fan base they have been way too spoilt over the course of the last 2/3 seasons.

Anyway lets not give up, I hope the players have a bit more determination than our fans. 3 pts off with 17 games to play!

And if we don't make it we'll try again. Our squad next season whatever division we are in is going to be way stronger then the squad we had last time in the Championship.

I personally don't think being a top end challenging Championship team is any less exciting then being in the PL. My biggest disappoitment would be the loss of Delap so early, but it would be inevitable we'd lose him soon in any case. And being in the Champ doesn't mean you don't see these players as often they start off on loan in that division.

In a back four, surely Godfrey is a RB? I was thinking he was a replacement for Clarke.

I'd say Godfrey would be first choice cover for right back and right centre back. For Woolfenden to get a spot in the first team, two from Tuanzebe, Johnson, Godfrey and O'Shea would have to be unavailable, unless we switch back to the three.

I am not, he will be a starter for us next season in the Championship when others have moved on and will still be making a good living, and will probably get another crack at the Premier League.

Mick Mills' comment was "it was purely a financial decision by Town, to be able to get a fee for him", supposedly in the summer.

He won't get in ahead of McKenna's first choice players, which the manager himself referred to as Axel, O'Shea, Greaves, Davis as being his first choice.

If Woolfenden sees himself a first choice material and wanting regular games ( i foubt thstvwoukd be in a PL team), then he will probably leave in the summer, and I wish him Good luck in his quest.

Hence I expect him to be loaned out. Get him game time to try and boost his fee. Sitting in the stands for the rest of the season won't do that.

If the club had an option it makes sense that he signed a new contract, as it has probably boosted his salary in the interim.

Why? He's a valuable part of the squad, who has started a fair few games this season and is a Dara O'Shea injury from being a regular - that's a pretty enviable position to be in as a Premier League player for your home town club

As I said before, won't Godfrey come in before Woolfenden if O'Shea goes down? I'd say he's first back up at both RB and RCB, especially considering Johnson's form.

What if he plays badly, gets injured etc etc

I also suspect there is no way he would have a release fee. You use that if you think you're going to get interest from teams above you to force a teams hand. If you're a backup and you want out, most of the time clubs are sensible enough to come to a sensible mutually beneficial valuation.

I know some see it as heresy to say anything against Woolfy ("he's one of our own" etc.) but I still think the Fridge would have been a far better option to keep. Always rated him and was never quite sure why KM didn't as much.

Edmundson wasn't that much better at defending than Woolfenden, if at all, and Woolfenden's stronger at playing out from the back.
