if we get relegated....how will the team line up by end of August? on 22:09 - Feb 5 by Sparky85

Interested to know why people think Davis and Hutch will defo be off? Neither have really set the world alight this year.

I think there is a chance one or both could still be here.

Jens unfortunately will be off

The issue we have had this season is that players coming in have to hit the ground running and don't really have the time on their side to bed in - especially if they're bought from the Championship.

A Bournemouth, Brentford, Brighton type club can buy someone and integrate them into the squad without the player needing to be an instant hit. They won't be in danger of going down, but they already have good players so they can afford a year or so to integrate a player in. You look at Semenyo at Bournemouth, Lewis-Potter at Brentford as two examples both bought from the Championship, but without the expectation of needing to hit the ground running straight from the get go and they're now performing well for their respective clubs. We don't have that luxury.

Omari Hutchinson may not have set it alight, but he will fall into that bracket as above where he can be integrated into a squad without the pressure on his shoulders he has here.

Poll: If selling Jackson meant getting in a wide man, would you be happy with Garbutt?

Loads of potential scenarios to come yet and these things rarely work out as predicted but this is a rough guess.

Palmer

H Clarke
Woolfenden
Greaves
New LB

New CM
Taylor

Ogbene
Chaplin
Philogene

New ST

Rest of the squad; Walton, Johnson, New CB, Baggott, Townsend, Humphreys, Morsy, New CM, Burns, Broadhead, New AM, Szmodics, Hirst, New ST.

Leaving: Muric, Slicker (loan) Davis, O'Shea, Tuanzebe, Burgess, Luongo, Hutchinson, J Clarke, Delap, Al-Hamadi

I think we'll lose quite a few because the growing gap between the leagues means that recruiting relegated players will become more important for newly promoted teams.

Muric will leave. His performances won't have endeared him to many, but lots of teams now want a ball-playing goalkeeper, so we'll be able to send him abroad or to whoever Russell Martin manages next. Palmer the first choice, with Walton as back-up (if he's happy) and Slicker on loan.

I think Davis, Tuanzebe and O'Shea will get Premier League moves and Burgess may look elsewhere with his contract up and Greaves the long-term priority here. We're quite well futureproofed here with Woolfenden and H Clarke top end Championship players and Baggott probably ready to be in the squad now. It's probably only a starting LB and reserve CB that we'll need. Johnson doesn't fit the RB role right now but he may do against weaker opponents, plus his wages will be hard to shift so we'll have to accomodate him.

There will be a big overhaul in midfield, whichever league we're in. Wouldn't surprise me to see Taylor get more minutes as he's shown a lot of progression in his cameos this season and hasn't looked out of place.

I've put Jack Clarke on the list to leave, not because I particularly want him to but with four players who can play on the left/in the left 10, I think someone will inevitably have to go and he's the least suited to the position. Perhaps a return to Sunderland if they swap places with us? If McKenna is still here, he'll want another ball-carrier to play a number of positions behind the striker. Maybe a certain Ecuadorian...

Up front, we'll go big on a striker to replace Delap. The club have probably sent Al-Hamadi to Stoke to inflate his value for a sale, so maybe two additions here as Hirst will struggle with fitness.

Exactly. Hutchinson is an interesting one - suspect he’ll go if we go down but how much for I’m not sure.

Cajuste won't be here if we are relegated!

He's the standout Ipswich player who really looks comfortable at PL level.

It was an obligation to buy deal subject to remaining in the PL, £10m fee I believe, and what a deal that would be - now that is the smart transfer business we should have looked at across the board, unfortunately the smart business we have done has been in the minority really.

I imagine we will recoup the majority of what we paid if we did sell, but what we see of that initially may not be great. Do Chelsea have a sell on? Any buyer may well bulk up the add ons rather than a decent fee given how much potential he has etc.

My worry is that clubs may look to take him on loan with an option/obligation given he will have 4 years left on his deal meaning we don't really benefit in the summer or for next season - this would depend the interest in him and if he has no intention of playing in the Championship next season but we don't want to sell him permanently.

It's a fair price, but I don't think it's a 'what a deal that would be' personally.

Good player, but for the position he plays, he's not physically robust enough to do 90mins. You can see flashes of why he is contracted to a club like Napoli, but £10m is a fair price for him.

I just cannot agree with that.

Jens is so good, the way he receives the ball on the turn, he can take under pressure, he can play with the game in front or behind him, he drive with the ball, he's a great physical profile.

His only negative I guess is durability, not availability, but durability - I don't know whether it is fatigue or tactical, but he doesn't really go past 70 - although he doesn't ever really look out on his feet.

£10m is a terrific price for him in my opinion.

Think people overestimate how many big sales generally get done in this context.

Think it's obvious Delap will go and I don't think Tuanzebe or Burgess are likely to sign new contracts at this point.

Beyond that? Not intending this as criticism but I don't think any of our other new signings have played well enough for us to even recoup our outlay (O'Shea perhaps). What we paid for Davis makes that one more likely, but his attacking numbers have deteriorated across the season too.

It wouldn't surprise me if everyone bar those three and our returning loanees was still here in August should the worst happen.

On O'Shea - was talking to a friend about this.

In my mind - he's done enough to prove he's a Premier League player. But, if we go down he'll have been relegated three times. Would he really fancy a move to say back to Burnley (for arguments sake) and be involved in a relegation battle yet again? He may well prefer to stay and have a chance of winning something for once? Unlikely, but not out of the question - and it does depend who comes in for him I guess. If a more 'established' PL team comes in for him, then of course he'll be off.

Although, I am aware I very much have blue tinted glasses on and cluthing at straws.

I think Jens is better suited to a less physically demanding league than the Premier League to be honest. The durability issue seems chronic for him sadly. Absolutely lovely player and if we stay up we buy him but if we go down - we all know how critical durability is in the championship….

I hope we keep the squad almost as it is. They’ve learned on the job on the premier league so it’s already infinitely more experienced than the one we kicked off against Liverpool with in August.

I agree with whoever else said that I don’t think we’ll be under huge financial pressure to sell. In fact I dont think we do at all as long as the owners are agreeable.

Players will have to go to balance the squad and get us to squad of 25 and we don’t currently have Axel or Burgess contracted beyond this season but I’d prefer to retain them if we can. Loan players will return to parents and I don’t think Jens stays - not suited to a 46 game season and really not durable for English football full stop. Lovely player though, just think England isn’t the best place for him to play.

Delap goes for sure. We can’t hold him back now. Of the others I think there’s a good chance we keep them unless the money on offer is too appealing to say no to.

McKenna - coin toss. I actually think he might stay. Very hunch driven admittedly.

I was thinking about this the other day. We are not really a premier league club now. Essentially there’s now a mini league consisting of yo-yo clubs such as ourselves, Leicester, Southampton, Leeds, Sheff U and Burnley. You get promoted by staying in the PL and you get relegated by failing to bounce back. Wolves might replace us or Leicester or someone else might break in from the championship but our first objective if we can’t stay up is establish ourselves in that group. Yo-yo might not be the correct description but with the top 17 of the PL seemingly so well resourced and the parachute teams in the championship the same relative to everyone else at the level that has to be our minimum objective now.

Keep growing. Keep getting stronger. Come up more stable and experienced than last time and have a better crack it.

Feels weird saying this as he's not played for us yet but I think Palmer could be a candidate to be sold in the summer. One of the senior keepers would surely go and purely from an FFP point of view this makes the most sense to me. If he has a good half a season and shows he can be a Premier League keeper, someone will pay more than £2m for him. Muric has already been part of a Championship promotion team and if the fanbase gives him a chance, I think could still be a good bet in the long run.

Another one that I think could be sold is Johnson. Signed for a free so any money will be profit and has Premier League experience. I could see someone signing him as a squad player.

I reckon Ogbene will have a big role to play. Burns won't be playing again in 2025 and Ogbene was clearly bought as an upgrade on Burns. With him missing most of the season there's no chance anyone will want to sign him, but we know he's a good player.
