Eustace wanting to move to Derby 19:13 - Feb 10 with 2559 viewsExiled2Surrey

Why? (Apart from having played there and the obvious wish to manage KJ and MH)

You just know that Blackburn will disintegrate opening up another place in the playoffs…

The main reason- being the owners are absolutely the worst owners in the entire pyramid. Think I read somewhere they had brought in nearly 50m of player sales in the last 12 months - and hadn’t bought a single player in. Either loans or free transfers only

Literally taking every penny out

I read that his family have not moved there with him as well.

Not happy with what he perceives to be Blackburn's broken promises in the transfer market, they've yet to offer him a deal beyond the summer, and his family are based in the Midlands.

Championship managers are far more likely to consider those wider factors rather than just short-term success. Good luck to him.

I think it's fair to say Derby is a signficantly bigger club as well

Well their average attendance is around double that of Blackburn's and has been for years so I think you'd have to say that

If recent attendances are the barometer then that would be fair. Blackburn have won more trophies, albeit most of them in 200AD. Premier League winners and League Cup winners in the past 30 years though.

It's always an interesting discussion re the "size" of clubs. I tend to think in terms of size of fanbase more than anything, though average position in the pyramid has to fit it somehow.

Even then it's important to note attendances don't capture fanbase size at any given one time and you have to think in terms of where clubs are in a cycle (attendances tend to go up with a promotion/success and gradually fall away). I think Derby are very much in the 30k+ crowds at good times (like us, Leicester, Forest, Wolves, Sheffield clubs etc etc) whereas Blackburn are more like 20k at good times (more like Burnley, Huddersfield, etc). I'm sure everyone has their own picture of this in their heads though!

I would imagine Derby will pay more. However, if they go down would there be a clause to reduce that? If he goes, it would be quite amusing for Blackburn to make the play offs and Derby go down.

Agree with that, and there are sometimes outliers. Bradford is an interesting one to me, they've been bobbing around in L2 for years now generally not doing very much, but still get nearly 20,000 there. They wouldn't look out of place in the Championship. Valley Parade's a bit weird, half of it is quite big.

Someone needs to come up with a club size formula factoring in current standings, historical honours and recency, ground size, attendances etc.

Agreed on that. Blackburn always been a small club elevated above their station by Walker’s money originally. Now plodding along not doing much, with 15k crowds.

Derby are a proper club with excellent support .

I would imagine east midlands is a nicer area to raise a family than east lancs. Factors like that might come into it.

I've not seen much of it, but what I have, the fans (Blackburn) appear to be mostly sympathetic with him.

That probably speaks volumes

As an aside, it's still very novel feeling to be commenting on basket case clubs which are not ours. Long may it continue!
