Worst part of your job 13:19 - Jan 29 with 7296 viewsCotty

Is there a bit of your job that is just ten times worse than the rest of it? That you dread every day/week/month/year?

I've just spent over a week marking exams. I only have 20 scripts left to do and I am seriously thinking about quitting rather than marking them. Even the thought of not having to do it again for another year is not helping that much.

Team meetings, more specifically when we get to the ‘Any other business’ part. Only once a month but the same couple of people bring up the same issues all the time and it’s so dull.

Designing websites. I never had much talent, but the little i did have has gone. I wish people would just give me a layout and my job was to realise it / code it.

(sorry, you did ask.)

Why don't you reward yourself after you've done your last 20 papers? A foot long spliff?

Forced team engagement

There's a very good reason I'm not friends with the people I work with, so I really don't want to go to a rubbish chain restaurant or bar with them when we all get together

A bit of footy is a massive pick me up - nice one.

Eurgh I hear you. Loads of people at work spend ages sitting around drinking coffee talking to each other, and then end up having working late and over weekends. I'll ignore you all and go and spend time with people I actually like thanks all the same

100%

My life outside of work is great, I definitely don't need work to encroach on that. It's sad that rather than paying employees what they're worth, a lot of companies will now add things like employee nights out to the "benefits" package when advertising for jobs

Presenting. I've never really managed to get over my fear of it and it's becoming increasingly important to the work i do. I used to be able to get out of it somehow but now I'm self employed that's not an option.

Have you ever gone along to a Toastmasters club?

A friend of mine was terrified about giving a best man's speech and presenting at work, so went along to one to practice public speaking. Really helped him to get some practice in and gain confidence speaking in front of strangers

Having to "Tell the story" as in make sure that you get the narrative right or "your use of language is important".

I am far too long in the tooth for this BS. There is no f**king story here are the facts. Lump it!

Nope, not heard of that before. Will have to look into it.

Nothing that makes me want to quit but filing expenses.

For whatever reason, we won't move to one of the many apps available but persist instead with paper receipts. These invariably get lost and therefore you need to find the transactions on your bank statements. Uber obviously don't do paper receipts either so there's a ton of going back through uber records and downloading the PDFs for certain trips.

It would be easier if I filed them as I went but I obviously don't and end up with 3 months worth expenses to file at a time. Which is what I'm currently sat doing now.

Annual tax return. Used to be OK submitting via GoSimple (a Which? online form/calculator) but now new ID checks are in place, you have to go through Stripe verification, where the scanned QR code method doesn't progress, your driving licence details are 24 x said to be "invisible" via live stream, when you submit a previously taken photo of your driving licence you're then asked to *also* take a photo of the back of it - etc etc etc.

Firing people.

Also do you catch many students using AI when you’re marking? Have heard higher education is in bits over it.

Occasional HR issues. Thankfully fairly rare, but had a real problem person in our team last year, that caused all sorts of headaches for us/me, and trying to manage it paralysed me at times. Just horrible and difficult to navigate a way through.

Thankfully I don't have too many dull jobs, and probably less than 30% of my job is routine, so any crap thing tends to have a limited shelf life.

I was born underwater, I dried out in the sun. I started humping volcanoes baby, when I was too young.

The constant adulation. It's so draining.

Seriously, though. Meetings. I find them incredibly tedious. Marking is a close second though, so I feel your pain.

Excavating deep into the bog in winter. It's wet, ( on Monday I had water go over my left welly..) and miserable. But mainly i absolutely fear hitting bog bodies...

Don't mind skeletons and random bones, but there something about the texture and look of bog bodies that I find incredibly disturbing

I think it may be wiser to light up yer foot long spliff as you begin the marking process. May make the whole task way more bearable..

Annual appraisal. I suffer imposter syndrome (Yes it's real!), and I get a real fear that I am going to get loads of bad feedback but it's always mostly positive.
