Worst part of your job 13:19 - Jan 29 with 7298 viewsCotty

Is there a bit of your job that is just ten times worse than the rest of it? That you dread every day/week/month/year?

I've just spent over a week marking exams. I only have 20 scripts left to do and I am seriously thinking about quitting rather than marking them. Even the thought of not having to do it again for another year is not helping that much.

Annual appraisal. I suffer imposter syndrome (Yes it's real!), and I get a real fear that I am going to get loads of bad feedback but it's always mostly positive.

You’re obviously good at flipping burgers.

Keep up the good work.

Yep, marking, marking and marking. Is there any more mind numbing part to education. Dealing with thirty teenagers on a Friday afternoon is so much more preferable, strange though it might sound to those outside of educationland.

They closed our office in Lowestoft in 1996 and made us work from home with a laptop which did not work.
We could cope with that.
But the agressive management wanted us to come down to Ipswich once a month for a meeting to explain ourselves.

We would arrive and go into the lift. But we had to press button 2 to get to the office.
We would all look at each other, take a breath, and press the button.

Glad that is over now.

Being asked to maintain a 15 year old ship on a constantly reducing budget, with a crew who are encouraged to complain - which then means you get a bad apple amongst the crew and it becomes a nightmare to have any discipline.

The food is atrocious.

Social welfare on board is transactional these days, people only want to participate in social stuff if they have the chance of winning money.

The lack of competence, our seamen need more and more instruction these days.

I hate people.

Honestly the worst thing about mine is the commute. But at 45 mins drive (on the rare occasions the A14 is clear) I know many have worse.

I'd move closer but then wife would have to go further, so I take one for the team.

I do also have some anxiety about a key piece of software our business uses which is really vital to my department, and only a small esoteric cabal understand how it works, this handful of people are spread across the globe, only communicate by secret handshake and only meet to induct new members once every 25 years. They certainly don't reply to emails asking to investigate a problem, or should I dare request an improvement.

Yeah. I didn’t mind the people I worked with, although there were some right HR headaches at times. But I had to deal with any complaints and that side really boiled my piss. Some were genuine, and that was fine. It was the self-important, pompous tvvats I couldn’t stand. Being polite and professional was very hard at times.

Massive PET hate of mine.

My pub tenants not returning phone calls from contractors, suppliers, Utility brokers etc. Essentially all people who are trying to help them. I then get the call to say they cant get in touch and I have to end up chasing the tenants. Time I just dont have.

Just answer the F*****g phone

The commute is depressing. So's the endless banter with Wolves fans about who's worse.

Everyone loves Fridays except me. Friday is our senior management meeting day. They've long stopped holding it in one of the pubs in Brindleyplace or up Broad Street and now we have four hours of dull stats speak and plates of jaffa cakes and the sort of biscuits you find in sh*t markets between 10.30am and 3.30pm with an hour break for lunch in a conference room that looks like it was modelled on a Sweeney set.

My manager always opens with the same joke about how he started with the company in 1988 and he'd get less for murder. Guffaw guffaw from the Brummie sycophants. I genuinely think he models himself on a cross between Des Barnes out of Corrie and Derek Hatton.

Getting puked on whilst taking a group of young ladies to Peterborough in my taxi was a low point, we were heading north up the A1 at the time and they then got bolshy when I refused to continue the journey. Headed back to St. Neots asked them to leave at the Market Square and then headed home to shower before the lovely task of cleaning the car.

Didn't bother with the fine as they made it clear they wouldn't pay, was a real, rare f@ck my life moment.

Excavating deep into the bog in winter. It's wet, ( on Monday I had water go over my left welly..) and miserable. But mainly i absolutely fear hitting bog bodies...

Don't mind skeletons and random bones, but there something about the texture and look of bog bodies that I find incredibly disturbing

That surely has to be the wierdest 'worst part of your job' I've ever come across.

Tell us more about the bog bodies. Ancient or recent? Benign or criminal? How many?
