Question for TWTD's resident gardeners.
My girlfriend has a yearly issue with slugs getting into loads of the outdoor plants that she tries to grow, whether in individual pots or in the ground.
She has tried lots of suggestions that she read about online but nothing has solved the problem. She doesn't want to do anything that will kill the slugs (i.e. pellets) but wants to solve the problem of course.
Any recommendations please for effective strategies? Thanks in advance. |  |

I have to say that last year was so bad that I was giving them the sharp edge of my trowel. Monty may not have approved but in the ecological balance they seem to have lost a lot of natural predators. However I do get some frogs in the garden and Im not convinced they eat that many. |  |

Thank you for all the replies. I believe she has already tried the egg shells and gravel. I'm not sure about the copper strips or coffee grounds; I'll suggest those.
Seems like there aren't really any methods which are absolutely effective. |
Ultimately, you either have to kill them, or accept them being there.
All the suggested methods can reduce the impact, buy you'll never stop them! |  |

I find that a pointy stick works well. Think of it as a kebab for the birds. |  |

I just dig small holes in the ground around the most precious crops, then put a small containers ( plastic cup, old glass etc) in hole and drop a couple of inches of Guinness (other beers are available ) in the bottom.
Cups are full in the morning, then leave slugs out for the birds etc |
Great watching the birds unable to perch on the fence after too, I bet! |  |

I’ve had some success with a thick ring of Vaseline around the sides of any pots. Just remember it’s there if you move the pots, which I never do and end up with messy hands and ruin the barrier.
I wasn’t getting slugs in the pots, but I suppose it could have been because I was using pots anyway. It could have been a windup for all I know, yet it seemed to work. |  |
