A fantastic point today.
There’s no doubt Morsy has been great for us since he joined, but for me Phillips is the better midfield option in there with Cajuste. When he plays like he did today, Phillips offers more than what our skipper does when he plays. Sentiment needs to go out the window regarding team selection and we play our best XI from now until the end of the season and for me Phillips needs to start.

He did fine in general but this seems more like a narrative decided on before kickoff.

I don't take offence at that. I was just offering some balance to the OP talking about "When he plays like he did today" because he seemed to have forgotten Phillips' mistakes, one of which led to their goal. That's all I was commenting on.

I thought Phillips was solid, not spectacular, and like you I was frustrated with his giving away too many free kicks in dangerous positions (which were always likely to lead to conceding a goal). However, without a decent run of games, it must be difficult for him to become fully match fit and an effective cog in the team, particularly forging a partnership with Cajuste.
I would like to see him start the next 3 or 4 games alongside Cajuste, with Morsy replacing Cajuste if he can't complete the 90 minutes. It may be that we'll then see an improvement in those fouls, or at least the number and position of them.
I can't quite believe I'm saying this, having been a massive fan of Morsy ever since he joined the club, however I agree with the OP that, at the moment, I would like to see Phillips start ahead of Morsy. | | | |
