do people feel the need to call the AFD racists or fascits simply because the BBC or Sky News has told them to or have they thought this one out - a party that looks after German interest first and does not believe (as history has shown time and time again) that Christian / Muslim coexistence which is not putting muslims down - simply saying their culture is not fungible - good for them on many levels ..... is possible and wants to tighten its borders - whats the problem with that ? exactly what Trump is doing and where we will follow in 3/4 years or sooner ... someone has gotta pay the bill for all this and as Musk is finding out hundreds of billions being wasted and the Germans who also pick up the bill for the rest of Europe are sick and tired of it - next election sure the AFP will pee the election - what have they got now after last night ? Tories and Labour in coalition = will just make their problems a whole lot worse and piss even more Germans off - its not rocket science
the thing that puts the afd beyond normal politics isn't it's policies, which largely align with other european parties on the right, but the previous utterances and allegiances of its members and leaders and it's associations with nasty extremists throughout it's history.
And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

And my comment about her hair not being really blond was ironic, just as it was ironic that Hitler himself didn't conform to the Aryan stereotype that drove a lot of what he did.

your post isn't discriminatory, but commenting on the appearance of politicians is generally pretty crap.
re your right to free speech - if what you had posted had been discriminatory then no one on here has defended the right to free speech that goes beyond the law.

I think that's "generally" true but in the context of German history and current day developments, my view is what I posted is political satire which often does involve appearance.
Anyway, I'm totally at ease with what I posted but, as I said to Ryorry, I apologise that (not if) I offended you.

There's a fine line between satire and insults though, sometimes it can depend on the 'room'. Given the AfD leader's sexual orientation I could see you jibe going either way. Much like opinion divided over a journalist mocking Meloni over her height:

I would have thought that even the most basic Russian AI bot could do joined up sentences and punctuation by now. Disappointing.

If you thought my jibe at sexual orientation was anti-LGBT+ (as opposed to anti-Musk), you clearly haven't been following what I've posted since I joined TWTD.
As regards the "room", I take the view that there is a mixture of opinions on TWTD. Of course, it might have been different if, say, I made a satirical joke about Christ on a Christian website, but that is not something I would do.
As regards the Meloni case, the result, at face value, does seem rather extraordinary but maybe reflects different laws in Italy.
I also note this passage from the article, and am not sure a British court would do the same.
"It is not the first time she has taken legal action against a journalist or someone who has criticised her publicly. Since coming to power, her government has been accused of making strategic use of defamation suits to silence journalists and public intellectuals.
In a high-profile case last autumn, the anti-mafia writer Roberto Saviano was found guilty of libelling Meloni and fined €1,000 for calling her “a bastard” over her migration policies. The case dated back to a TV interview in December 2020 in which Saviano, author of the bestselling book Gomorrah, castigated Meloni and her fellow far-right leader Matteo Salvini on TV over their vitriol towards charity-run ships rescuing people in the Mediterranean."

My point is that, with targets who will latch on to any reason to deflect an attack, we should concentrate on the issues and not physical appearances. Same point as Ryorry I guess.

No more jokes then in Private Eye about Trump's appearance.
It did occur to me a couple of minutes ago while making my coffee, that Weidel's looks may have influenced the AfD's selection of her as party leader, subliminally if not more, which would of course be relevant to your OP.
Having said that, I guess such decisions are partly true in most walks of life. And I don't know anything about their selection process - if they are biased like that, would they have chosen a gay woman?
I've said many times that if T.rump & Johnson had had mousy, balding pates, I have my doubts they'd have got to be POTUS/PM.

That was my thought too, and part of the reason I mentioned the dyeing of the hair, although she might like me have been a blond(e) when young.
Incidentally, this is her Wikipedia photo.
And as a further contradiction, she is in a relationship with a Sri Lankan born woman.

And Private Eye has been so influential that Trump's support has ebbed away as he lost the Presidential election ?
I rather doubt Private Eye is read in the US but it is not a magazine with a political agenda in any event, being keen to expose and take the mickey out of anyone of any political persuasion.
And as an aside, I would imagine that it's readership crosses political boundaries, so the satire can in a limited sense kick home on both sides.

Imagine being a young and enthusiastic servant of the Motherland as you sign up for the KGB troll factory thinking you're doing your bit to protect Russia from her enemies and then you get assigned to this place.

while i would personally be pro the "you go low, we go high" tactic; it doesn't work against far right "populists"
The whole point is to convince them that they are mistaken in the first place and calling them far right populists (even if some narratives firmly place them in that bracket) just reinforced their sense of identity and makes it more difficult to uncouple them from the nonsense they believe.

i don't think you'll ever convince bannon/farage et al that they're mistaken, way too far gone and not in their financial interest

I don't think you and I are as far apart on things as our interactions on this thread might suggest but, going back to my OP, it will have no impact in Germany, and I wouldn't have posted anything similar in relation to Nigel Farage or Reform because that is not the way to win friends and influence people in this country..

I doubt I will ever meet Bannon or Farage, it's the ordinary folk I meet as I travel around this World that concern me. And I find things go much better with a dialogue.

for sure, i was meaning that it's relatively fair game to have a go at the bannons/farages rather than their supporters
