US votes against European UN resolution for Russia to withdraw from Ukraine 23:46 - Feb 24 with 2411 viewsStokieBlue

"On the same day, the UN General Assembly approved a European-backed resolution from Ukraine which demanded Russia immediately withdraw from the country.

There were also 93 votes in favour of this resolution, while 65 abstained and 18 voted against it.

The UK, France and Germany were among the countries that voted in favour of the Ukraine-backed resolution, which called for a "comprehensive, just and lasting peace in Ukraine".

The US, Russia, Belarus and North Korea were among those that opposed it."
[1].

This is where we are now, the US voting alongside Russia, Belarus and North Korea at the UN.

All best friend pariah states voting together then. It’s a cozy little club in which Trump is clearly quite at home.

Oh the laughter they’ll have that Trump blamed the victim. And to add insult to injury blackmailed Ukraine into a ludicrous ‘deal’ that robbed it of its assets, all justified with lies.

My suspicion is that when Russia finishes its Ukrainian meal, an agreement has already been made to split the booty stolen from Russia’s vassal - the price of Trump’s support for Putin.

Right and wrong is dead. Trump and his ugly henchmen have no morals whatsoever. Bare faced lies, theft and unjustified aggression are lauded behaviours and to be admired in the ‘art of the deal’.

This vote alone tells me Starmer should go nowhere near Trump. There’s no good outcome to be had. Sir Kier: stop talking and do something! Start the process of rearming and invest in defence industries and protect them from takeover and foreign interference.

Start working with like minded people in Europe and across the world. If the US carries on flushing down the pan organisations that have been a force for good since WW2, whether it’s UN, UNESCO, WHO or NATO, lead and pick them up! Or at least try. Don’t retreat.

The world is more than how dictators Trump, Xi and Putin want to divide it.

The irony is it was originally a US resolution amended under European pressure.

It is a little concerning that over 60 Countries, presumably not wishing to offend either Russia or US, abstained .

Don't think this is right.

There were two resolutions, one from Ukraine backed my the EU which said Russia had to leave Ukraine and one from the US which didn't mention Russia having to leave.

The US voted against the one which stated Russia had to leave Ukrainian territory.

Their own resolution was amended by the EU because it was pretty flakey and the US didn't like this an abstained on their own resolution.

Happy to be corrected but that's my understanding, I can read more about it later if time allows.

There were three votes, one by Security Council and two by General Council.

The US resolution was passed by Security Council with five abstaining, all from Europe and included France & Britain.

The General Assembly earlier adopted two resolutions, one drafted by Ukraine and Europeans and one drafted by the U.S. that was amended by the assembly to include its long-held language supporting Ukraine. Those votes gave Ukraine and European states a diplomatic victory over Washington.

I think that was the £500bn originally demanded.

If they have settled on a lower figure which includes security guarantees then it's possible.

I do wonder if the next thing we see is going to be Trump effectively buying Putin off with a share of those minerals. It really wouldn't surprise me.

Surely the elephant in the room is the 15-20% of Ukraine Russia controls, Ukraine wouldn’t give that up and Russia won’t concede. Not sure how they get around this without paying a huge wedge of cash to Putin.

Agree it's an awful vote from them - but not surprising sadly.

I think it was only last year or the year before the UK, France, Russia and North Korea were the only one's to appose a motion on victim assistance re: nuclear testing. So we're not immune from such company ourselves.

Behind closed doors, I think Ukraine has written off the land it has lost. It can't regain them so what can they do. They have lost their former backer USA, debt-ridden Europe is losing interest in a lost cause. It's about taking the loss without losing too much face, probably with a new leader as Zelensky might well be replaced.

What Ukraine wants is irrelevant. It’ll be part of the mother country within a year, 18 months. The deal is sharing the spoils robbed from the corpse between Russia and the US. The laugh is of course once Putin’s bloody hands is on the lot, the US will be totally squeezed out.

They’re not going to go to war over dirt in the ground in Russia. Given neither’s word can be trusted, they’ll squabble and rage, the US will have Greenland and Panama, Russia a free hand in Europe.

The noise over Ukrainian elections is purely that with a rigged result, Ukraine will fall into Russia’s hands with no further complaint. I wonder if Zelenski will have a ‘heart attack’, fall from a window or finish in a gulag after a show trial? Either way he is a dead man. An irritant to both Trump and Putin as the last thing they need is somebody telling the truth.

That’s why it’s vital the rest of Europe follows Poland’s lead and gets off its collective rear end.

Things would be so different if Zelenskyy had carried thr investigations Trump wanted with regards to thr Biden family.

If there is one thing you be certain of, with Trump, it is his ability hold a grudge and pay back should an opportunity arise.

He certainly loves a grudge, as shown by his clear plans to go after those that went after him when Biden won let alone poor old soon to be disposed of Zelenski.

Interesting Guardian article on Trumps extortion of Ukraine

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2025/feb/25/keir-starmer-foreign-aid-m

The key paragraphs say:
‘US foreign policy is now modelled on a mafia extortion racket. Protection is procured with tribute. Territory and any lucrative commerce attached to it is carved up between bosses. The more powerful among them takes the bigger share.

This way of doing international deals is perfectly aligned with the post-Soviet model of Russian statecraft that is a hybrid of bloodthirsty imperialism and gangster kleptocracy. It promises a slide back into the kind of ruthless competition for supremacy in Europe that western democracies spent decades after the second world war trying to make obsolete.’

It goes on to Starmer’s actions and which way this country needs to move.

I really have no idea how it’ll go on Thursday or what he hopes to achieve. I don’t envy him. I suspect Trump will seek to belittle and crush not just Starmer’s hand. He may not and it’s perhaps it’s fortuitous that Ukraine will be surrendering to the blackmail document on Friday and all focus will be on that.

One thing is for sure. The carve up of Ukraine’s assets will already have been agreed with Putin as after the next Ukrainian ‘election’ a Putin stooge will be in power - which is why the Dictatorship in Russia and Trump are calling for them. I suspect broad agreement on Putin’s future sphere of influence has also been agreed. The art of the deal
