....people get so entrenched in their "politics" that they can't think impartially.

To think that the correct punishment for punching a non threatening member of the public to the ground and then repeatedly punching him and threatening him will he is on the ground merits nothing more than a few weeks off the booze as punishment is ridiculous.

Add in the fact that he lied in his statement, then plainly he should have done a bit of bird, but because he represents your fave political party he should apparently be let off.

What a country.

the only people i've seen arguing that it was over-harsh are fookers, herbivore and lucan, none are big fans of labour, so don't think it's as simplistic as that

I think Herbers is right in this case. The "norm" for this kind of thing is usually a suspended sentence and/or some community service. Me and some pals got in a street fight at uni and while we warned we might be looking at custodial sentences, at the end of the day none of us got put away. We all had clean backgrounds, promising careers, blah blah. So that seemed to work in our favour and got us some leniency thankfully.

Well Herbs had just about convinced me that the sentencing was about correct.
But now I'm far from convinced again. Can't help but think a few months in prison with regular shoeings and a bit of prison love wouldn't have made you a better man

What yer reckon?

Fancy that, the OP is angry that a violent white criminal is getting jail time.

Game set and match with that reply.

3 options now:

1, your reply is ignored so they don’t have to recognize their comment is debunked
2, the bat sign is activated on their WhatsApp group and the rest of the gang will be along to defend and deflect
3, double down and dig in.

My hunch is 1, though 2 will be the usual “hilarious” hot takes or cutting one liners!

Quite, whereas some Labour supporters are saying he should have had a harsher sentence. These simplistic narratives aren't really conducive to grown up discussion.

....that I was talking about this forum.

I wasn't, hence I said "what a country".

It takes a certain level of narcissism to assume this forum is representative of the wider world, it isn't.

This was "Option 4".

haven't seen it in the country either, have the labour party complained that the original sentence was excessive? don't know where you're getting this narrative from

Nah - that's option 3

"I wasn't talking about this forum" - no, of course you weren't - just happened to put a comment on the thread where it was being discussed and some people (non-labour types) weren't up in arms.

"certain level of narcissism" - WTF are you going on about? That's is just drivel along the deflect/whataboutery lines.

You were trying (as usual) to make a political dig and went in for a sliding tackle, totally misjudged it (no change there) and wiped out the wrong player and scored an own goal.

Maybe we should be going down the Norwegian route. In this sense, bringing in the chap from Timpson's may be a start, but no doubt he won't get far with the "lock 'em up" mentality that prevails in this country.

"Norway's criminal justice system focuses on the principles of restorative justice and the rehabilitation of prisoners. Correctional facilities in Norway focus on maintaining custody of the offender and attempting to make them functioning members of society. Norway's prison system is renowned as one of the most effective and humane in the world.

Norway has one of the lowest recidivism rates in the world; in 2018 the reconviction rate was 18% within two years of release, with a recidivism rate of 25% after five years."

I should add that commenting on individual sentences seems a waste of time to me, if you haven't sat through the trial, and are not aware of the sentencing guidelines.

...a post referring to "any reasonable citizen". Not everything is about this forum.

Not complicated.

Not sure why you are making it personal, I didn't.

Do you know what, I didn't think that was what you meant when I read it - I assumed differently and whilst I may not be entirely convinced, you've said it was so I should take it at face value.

And yes, you're right - I did make it personal and you didn't. On reflection - I shouldn't have.

Apologies for making the personal dig.

....I specifically didn't say it only applies to those of a Labour persuasion, I'm 100% certain that the majority of Tory twangers would defend "their man" in a similar situation.

I was referring to the ridiculous tribalism of the county's political situation and how it blurs people's view.

Only my opinion obviously.

Peace out.

To be honest I just watched the video and it's difficult to see why there's no custodial sentence here.

Looks pretty unprovoked beyond the verbal. Victim as hands in pockets. Even worse rather then doing the right thing and admitting he'd had a few to drink and made a mistake he went for the bullsh1te defence of 'fearing he would be assaulted by this male and others in his group'.

By the way, we're your Trump avatar gone? Thought you were a big fan?

Keith Stalin???

Genuine question... how old are you? And has that ever got a laugh anywhere outside of your own head?

Changing Kier to Keith really screws up the two tier thing. Not even like Stalin’s first name was Keith unless Joe had a brother called Keith.

Assuming it's a first offence, I'd say a suspended sentence is about right.

You know as much as I that had this been a Tory MP punching a member of the public to the ground, and then laying into him while he was down you would say ‘lock him up and throw away the key’ and such like.
