40 years ago today that The Woolpack got refurbished. on 21:07 - Mar 6 by Korrupt
I heard we turned up early that day. I wasn't there. Perhaps you can tell us all what happened?
I never get tired discussing stories from that day.
We met in the Maid Marion at 11am.
It was lively from the off. At around 11.15 Canute Lee (RIP) decided to lay in the road and cause the traffic jam from hell.
Everyone enjoyed a good few drinks and (it's so hazy now so the times are a guess) we all got in a convoy to head into town at around 14.00
There was a massive traffic jam going down that main street through the city, I remember Dave (Day Day) Jordan sitting on Phil Mans Merc bonnet as we were driving through. The funniest thing for me was that we all got out of our transit for some fresh air and a load of blokes in front did the same. Thing is though, these blokes were building workers from Sunderland. They asked who we were playing and were a bit bemused when we said Norwich because a/ it was still relatively early and b/ they couldn't comprehend how much we were taking the p1ss on a derby game - you need to imagine a BIG convoy of blue and white vans and cars (It was also semi legal then to drink drive so it was all a bit chaotic.
Can't remember much after that or where we went but I do remember being in the Woolpack and it was hooligan central.
Now then, Ipswich had (and have) always had the upper hand on Norwich when it came to fisticuffs, but, that was a weird time and our team was faltering and in a way so were our fans.
Hooever - we were in The Woolpack and their lot were in The Bell and they made a half hearted attempt to get at us but they were quickly dispersed. There was more backwards and forwards over the next hour or two until it all went a bit mad. To their credit Norwich came up that little hill en masse, they had an admiral showing. Ipswich though charged them down the hill and it was all a bit push and go, a real stand off between two pretty impressive firms on the day (I'm sorry if that makes some people tut)
Hooever hooever -----Ipswich charged down the hill and some of our lot did a genius pincer movement going down the right hand side of The Bell and the Norwich motherfeckers got trapped and .....there you go.
The downside if I'm honest is that the OB put us on a massive march after the game to ensure we never came across any Norwich fans but they put us right through a residential area, and I swear to god, every single window got smashed, it must have been about 200. Crazy days.

“Hello, I'm your MP. Actually I'm not. I'm your candidate. Gosh.”
Boris Johnson canvassing in Henley, 2005.
Fast forward 40 years and it's the same as April showed everyone. And if you're a scum lad you'd be absolutely raging that every single time Ipswich come to town they still arrive 8am and head for a pub. There is no way in the world they would do that in Ipswich.
The April dance off must've destroyed them. They didn't face many of the lads that would usually travel and still couldn't come out on top, despite planning it all by all accounts.
Hilarious for a "city" isn't it.

Nodge have always been a weird lot. Never would show down here but would go mob handed at Grimsby or QPR.

This was a few years back but didn’t a load of them get nicked and sent down for a big ruck at Leicester?
Yeah. It was the year they went down to League One I think. Or the year Leicester did. I know they didn't get the chance to meet up the next year either way.
Were there a few 'visitors' as well that day? I know one West ham lad, Mod guy from Basildon who'd moved up here, and he pointed out some of theirs who'd come along for the ride. The train was full of nere' do wells! Some of which had no real interest in football, but did some 'shopping' round the city during the inter pub hours. the train home didn't fare well, chord was pulled, pile out! Town mob was the edgiest I ever saw.

It was a crazy day. We were diverted via a load of terraces that ended up with their windows smashed in and a fair few cars turned over and then there wasn't much left of the train carriages that took an age to head back down.
Mad days in a different era, as a young kid I thought it was the dogs lox .. I guess it was a a part of what shaped me a a whole load of others. Different times for sure and the best and the worst was exhibited back then and it was a part of growing up.
Very mixed feelings in hindsight....

Living near narrwich made a point of getting EDP the following day, front page pic. of blood covered scum fan and and not very complimentary to Town fans. If your not of the era you will tut and probably be offended but for a young teenage Town fan that was another glorious victory.

I don't recall any other teams lads there. The WHU guy would have been a one off I'm sure as they have never had any time for us and they have always had a very special relationship with Norwich, especially because of now brown bread Gary Williams

Wasn't there for the before, but was there for the afters and was at the "ground zero" where/when the lunacy started. I have recounted this many times...
Everyone was trudging back towards station past a row of terraced houses, a window opened from a first floor room and a woman "gobbed off" - I can't recall what she said, not even for the purposes of paraphrasing. What I do recall is the mood changed in an instant from just being a bit down to wild and feral. It was like the church scene in The Kingsmen.
House at "ground zero" lost all its front windows, and the motorbike parked in front took a kicking.
I know that the "posties" (knew some of them) decided to attack the sorting office, another group turned over a car dealership.
Being a shy 16 year old I carried on to the station as a crescendo of noise got louder; shouting, yelling, general hubbub, the sounds of windows smashing and sirens.
It didn't stop once of the train, carriage windows got smashed and the journey home was very cold.
The league game a few weeks later was not much more peaceful hooliewise, but at least we won! But given the cavity search at Carrer Rud how did people get pool balls and flower bombs into the ground?

I remember the walk away from the ground after the game. Vividly remember the many windows getting bricked.....maybe because I may have partaken in that "activity". Not something I would boast to the kids about now, and I would be a tutting old man if I saw the yoof doing anything like that now, but, but, but......as a 16 year old Town supporter (was probably wearing some combination of pink Kappa v-neck / white Lyle & Scott roll neck / Louis cords / Fila tracksuit top / Farah trousers / deerstalker hat), causing havoc on the patch of our bitter enemy, it felt completely exhilarating at the time!

Was thinking earlier that I could remember what I was wearing, so as you're opened that particular door...
Dark blue Aquascutum jacket (shop lifted personally by "Winkle" allegedly), sweater bought from Nickleby's on Crown Street (a purveyor of fine clothing; only ever had 3 of the same item / colour - S, M & L), shirt with large light / dark blue checks, Pepe jeans and Diadora trainers. Don't know why I can remember this... Oh yeah probably because this was match day "uniform" and how I can id myself in the MOTD footage of FA Cup 6th round game at Goodison
