Travel advice wanted for the Greek islands. 13:19 - Mar 7 with 1054 viewsMattinLondon

Hello
This summer we’re aiming to go to Greece for our hols - as a family we like the Greek islands which aren’t very touristy but have nice traditional tavernas along the harbour and are quite authentic. Not looking for places which cater for a lot of yachting crowd or geared for fine dining.

Wondered if anyone can offer any recommendations for islands which they have been to?

Thank you.

I'm going to Skopelos in September. Its very quiet (no direct flights, water taxi from Skiathos). A good friend has recommended it as a peaceful retreat with some decent tavernas. Jamie Oliver did a programme about one of them several years back - local plums apparently are superb.

Poll: would you rather

Kefalonia is great. Skala is fairly lively but not overly so.
Personally loved Lourdas and Sami, the former having a lovely beach backed by traditional tavernas, the latter with a cracking harbour and lots of wonderful eateries.
Easy to drive around to plenty of other coastal villages and towns. Argostoli harbour has turtles which come right up to the wall and a ferry will take you from there to Lixouri where there are many red sand beaches on the peninsula.
An alround not crowded and chilled out island.

We have no village green, or a shop. It's very, very quiet. I can walk to the pub.

Had a few nights in Kithira in 2023 during a 2 week tour of the Peloponnese

Absolutely beautiful little beaches. Not very touristy at all. Some great food from local tavernas in the centre of the Island. And it only took about 45mins to cross from East to West, so you've got the ability to chase the sun throughout the day

I did Kefalonia in 1985. It's got a good mix of beaches and tavernas like you say.
Myrtos beach is remote and unspoilt with little in the way of development.
It's the sort of beach that once you see it you want to go there.
Disreputable travel brochures for other holiday destinations seem to have an identical beach to Myrtos. They haven't - they've just used the photo.
All Greek islands tend to be great just off the tourist trail. If you turn up as a family I'm sure you will be welcomed.
The Greeks love the Brits because of Prince Philip who was a Greek.

Don't believe a word I say. I'm only kidding. Or am I?

Depends on what you really want. If nothing at night two weeks I would be bored to death. A lovely beach in the day if fine but come evening I need a few eateries bit of soft music and shops for other half to browse in.
Been to a few all islands have quiet resorts. I enjoyed Kos last Yr going back late june this Yr.

Vasilikos in Zakynthos (Zante) was quiet, beautiful and not very built up, due to the beaches having a protected loggerhead turtle population. Some nice boat trips available around the island, including the stunning Shipwreck beach.

Some good suggestions here. If you are OK with boat travel, the Aegean islands are beautiful, especially Kalymnos & its offshore buddy Telendos (fly to Kos, avoid the hordes of tourists there & step back in time).

We absolutely adore Koufonisia – it's one of the Small Cyclades, you can get there by boat fairly quickly from Santorini, Naxos or Mykonos. It's very small, you can walk around it easily. The water is the bluest I've seen in Europe and the beaches are a delight. Aeolos Hotel is the best I've used in Greece. There are some lovely little tavernas, one with a particularly special meat grill where everything is sourced from uninhabited Keros nearby. You can also make easy day trips to Schinoussa, Iraklia and Koufonisia's neighbour Kato Koufonisi on a ferry line that circles them all. All are wonderful. That entire group of islands are a real throwback, I cannot recommend them highly enough.

Also recommend Antiparos for somewhere a little buzzier/trendier but where it's very easy to find vast near-empty beaches, especially if you take a boat to Despotiko on the far side of the island.

Paxos or AntiPaxos both are small islands off the south coast of Corfu.

Beautiful, pretty chill... day trips to the mainland if you do want some element of civilization.

Naxos. Skopelos. Thassos. Lesvos. Samos to name but five that all fit your description.

Also western Crete.
