I thought yesterday was a microcosm of our season - very competitive, had chances, gave up chances and were probably on the wrong side of a tight game that could have gone our way. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve come away from a game this year feeling that way and it must be brutal for the team to be on the wrong side of it so often.

Honestly I think we probably are the 18th best team in this division so it isn’t really a sob story because it’s a fair reflection of where we are and where we should be. What I would say is that McKenna is right in his reflections (as he so often is) - for whatever reason we are still a team finding our feet at the level, integrating new players and trying new things out. Our front four is full of young and supremely talented individuals who are doing different things than what they’ve had to do previously and will be better for the experience and I think our general defending (and goalkeeping) is much improved. I really do see players and the general team getting better and it’s testament to good coaching and general management that they are still putting in confident and competitive performances like yesterday.

I come on here and it feels like a bit of a doomsday mood when I just don’t share that same negativity at all (and also feel that the general mood of fans at the game yesterday reflects my opinion on that). Relegation will be sad but definitely isn’t anywhere near the end of the road and you’d fancy whoever we have in charge (hopefully McKenna but who knows) would have a very good young squad to have a real crack at the Championship with next year.

What happens say if we sell Muric £1m this summer. Say we paid £10m and he’s ammortised over 5 years then there’s still £8m outstanding less the £1m recieved leaving £7m. Presume we have to do some sort of right off on the £7m?

Edit - I ammortised wrong should be £10m over 4 years so £7.5m to be written off less any fee received. I can’t recall the correct numbers reported but the principle remains the same/

As you say, his value as an asset on the books will have reduced by 1-year's worth.

The shortfall I think will then be an exceptional item on the accounts recording the loss. It may not need to be an exceptional item if it's considered a normal loss, but in my mind no club would plan to sell a player for less than their book value, therefore when it occurs, it counts as exceptional.

Edit - Footnote, I'm not an expert on 'football' accounting practices.

I think we'd try to loan him out and see what happens.

I would agree. He’s been a mistake for us but I still think he’s got a hell of a lot of potential…could make a really top keeper.
Time for me to retreat and take cover now.

Downes and Sheaf would probably be my ideal pick (if we're not recruiting from outside the UK).

I Imagine you could get both for £20m combined in the summer (providing Cov stay down). Paid for with 40-50% of Delap's sale.

That just leaves signing a genuine competitor for Hirst. I think we could spend £25-£30m this summer on 3x players which could tip the scales our way.

£50m parachute payment
£20-£25m club income
£45m Delap
£20m Davis

£30m outlay

£110m in the black for the season (before wages/club staff costs considered)

We will have £30-£40m-ish of amortisation in the accounts for next season too. But, I don't think we will 'need' to sell too many. If we get top dollar for Delap, I don't even think we need to sell anyone else. I think it'll come down more to who wants to leave this summer.

You can still be disappointed with the way the season has unfolded, it has been a frustrating one - and that is going to naturally be perceived as a negative outlook.

But it is also important keep it pretty sensible and balanced with any negativity, I find people tend go a little ott with and just look a bit daft.

The summer will be massive, I feel we do need to shuffle the pack, we had a special group, that had a special connection with the manger and the fans - felt everybody was in pure symmetry - and that is very very rare in todays game - almost felt like a cheat code at times.

I suspect we don’t ‘have’ to sell anyone (at least not for FFP). £30-40 ammortisation plus say £20m more per in wages compared to our last season in the championship is dwarfed by the additional £140m extra revenue just for one year in the PL plus the parachute payments.

In many ways I'd like to think this is an option, as I agree - he has massive potential. There may be too many fans who wouldn't give him another chance though, and that will turn out bad for both Muric and the club.

Financially it probably makes more sense to loan him out, but is it practical.
