Sorry if old news - or even fake news, but it looks pretty good to me. 19:44 - Mar 11 with 1283 views | Lord_Lucan | The US will immediately restore intelligence-sharing and security assistance to Ukraine, with Kyiv ready to accept a 30-day ceasefire with Russia. After talks in Saudi Arabia, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said he hoped Russia would agree to the deal, but If they say no, ‘then we’ll unfortunately know what the impediment is to peace here’.

The fear previously was that Russia would simply use a temporary ceasefire to regroup. A ceasefire that ultimately leads to a fair and lasting peace would be great news but I won't be holding my breath. I do hope that happens, though.

In fairness he was a Ukraine supporter. It maybe that he is setting up a way of reverting to what he actually believes. Though Trump could easily just ignore it.

Hang on, are you suggesting that the designated deal maker would do a deal outside of his remit?

Sorry if old news - or even fake news, but it looks pretty good to me. on 20:27 - Mar 11 with 1086 views | Guthrum | Trump cannot let Russia win on the battlefield, as that would remove his "peacemaker" dividend. Has to be through Trump-driven negotiations. All depends now on how much - or if - Putin is looking for an off-ramp from the present situation. In the present circumstances, he could perhaps avoid "punishment" for having started the conflict (more so than if Biden was in the White House), get sanctions removed and the like. It's a matter of how he judges Trump's determination and whether he believes he can win militarily regardless. I think if Putin rebuffs Trump's initiative, he may find the anger coming in his direction instead. Zelensky worked hard to get back on Trump's side after the unpleasant meeting. Putin has fewer friends to plead on his behalf and has more face to lose by kow-towing.

Happens from time to time. Depends how they can present it to the boss.

Putin cannot win this unless USA actively come 100% out on his side and as weak as the west is against Uncle Sam I cannot see this being allowed to stick. Lot's to go on this and it's obvious Trump wants the Ukraine resources. In a way you have to think that it's not a bad deal for life. I mean, everything has a cost, Do people think we fight wars for people free of charge? Blimey, I think UK only paid back USA and Canada back for their help in WW2 in 2006

That is the case. If you add interest and stuff, plus timescale of returns, then the purported deal is not so far over the top. Even if the USA completely abandoned Ukraine, the latter wouldn't stop fighting. It's quite possible the Russians wouldn't be doing much better in the war even then (especially if most of Europe was still backing Kyiv).

The Marshall plan - that was for post war redevelopment rather than fighting in WW2. Maybe someone more informed than me can confirm if the WW2 efforts were ever repaid ?

I think there is a chance that Europe and The Commonwealth will finally stand up to Trump in a pretty bolshy way if USA abandon Ukraine. People like to poo poo The Commonwealth but I don't think they realise the influence and solidarity.

There's quite a few big players in the Commonwealth - not least India.

I do hope Ukraine have told Trump he can have some of the minerals but only in the Russian occupied territory. That would add a very interesting dimension to things.

I suppose the problem with India is that for some reason they are quite pro Russia. I'm not joking but this is when Harry would be of benefit. We will have to send Kate I suppose.

That wasn't the Marshall Plan (which didn't require repayment). It was a separate loan provided to the UK by the USA and Canada post-war to keep the country afloat and cover Lend-Lease commitments. That was the one paid off in 2006. We defaulted on our WWI loans in the 1930s.

With India it's historical with wanting to be more non-aligned during the Cold War, where they could obtain military and economic kit, plus the US having supported their great rivals Pakistan at different times and wanting a couterbalance to China. In the Ukraine situation, they're happy to screw Russia for heavily discounted oil in exchange for a bit of fairly nominal support.

What happens if Putin says no? I wouldn't be surprised if the attack on Moscow was agreed by the US at the very least; to highlight the 'risk' of continuing the war.

Wouldn't it just.. If Russia aren't willing to hand back the taken Ukrainian land, then how can there ever be a peaceful solution to this?
