Proper dog fight down there.

Derby have strung two results together, Luton won last night. I was fearing for Stoke but they are winning at the moment.

Of all the stats that are now available, I think the possession one is probably the most meaningless.

When it first became a thing, I used to take great comfort from the games I couldn’t get to, seeing we were drawing 1 all after 70 mins, but with 60% possession.

Having watched our midfield pointlessly dab the ball about from side to side before either scuffing it harmlessly to the opposition or having an absolute unit push Omari over and break away, I hate the stat with a passion.

Added to that, we don’t see much of the ball in the PL anyway.

I know Brian Clough’s old adage, that it only takes a second to score a goal, was a bit of a stretch, but you kind of see his point.

Possession for possession's sake and Norwich are particularly guilty of this under their new manager as you say is meaningless statistic

It can be padded out massively with pointless zipping it round in their own half

The possession that matters is in the opposition half and final third really, you'd describe that as effective possession I guess, which is likely to force issues

Depends who or what they are possessed by.. For example, the spirit of Pele might be better than Satan.

I'd disagree with that to some degree. Obviously you can win games with about two per cent possession, as Maidstone illustrated down here, or you can be Southampton and have loads of possession to little effect, but overall it does give an indication of who has been in control of a match.

I think this has become more true since possession based Man City lost their dominance. It seems obvious but scoring a goal against 4 defenders is much easier than scoring a goal against 11 defenders so letting the opposition have the ball and breaking on them is more prevalent.

I mean its a bit more nuanced than that otherwise every team would have been doing that for years, but the balance has swung towards it more. The word "transition" is now a staple diet of the manager interview.

Just goes to show, it’s not about the amount of possession you have it’s what you do with it that’s important. Forest are the best example of this.

Indeed - epitomised by Russel Martin, have 70% possession but lose 5-0….followed by claiming some kind of moral victory for playing football the ‘right way’.

I think we are a bit guilty of being over obsessed with possession at times. Quite often during the press the centre back or keeper will have a decent option for a long ball but they'll pass it to the full back who's immediately but under pressure with a restricted angle to work with meaning the longer ball has a lesser chance of reaching one of our players or at least puts them in a less dominant position for the impending duel.
