Agree with your first paragraph.

There are much better ways to tackle that problem though, than making the small/medium family farm owners feel that they would have to sell up (as I’ve heard many say); some outlined on here by a poster who’s himself a farmer.

I’ve also outlined alternatives like covenances on land stipulating it cay only be used for agriculture; fit and proper person requirements (eg only those currently engaged in agricultural work can buy or rent it etc.)

It is like the private schools. Lots of fuss. I bet few if any sell up though. Its not about covenants, its about getting millions free of tax when everyone else has to pay, even for family businesses.

Well they can hand the business down to their children early, like any other family business would have to do to not pay IHT.

Not when it’s been landed (sorry!) on them with 0 notice.

I’ve seen my family’s farm get broken up - the real issue is those saying that need to actually look into it and check, because the reality vs the reporting is very different.

It’s easy me saying I might have to do XYZ for my boys when it comes to inheritance, but I’d be guessing without consulting professionals and getting the legal stuff nailed down. Farmers need to do the same.

Sorry to hear about your family’s farm; certainly agree with the rest of your post.

The wealthiest have always paid their fair share as individuals

That’s why we have a higher tax rate

Those living in bigger houses pay more council tax but don’t receive any more services

Those buying bigger houses pay more stamp duty

Those buying big cars pay more road tax but don’t drive on any better roads than anyone else.

A lot of so called wealthy people have private medical insurance which saves the NHS money

This labour ideal that those with the broadest should bear the brunt like they haven’t been doing this for many years in any case

The wealthiest do not pay their share of tax. They have mechanisms like moving money and assets around and accountants to avoid that. The last estimate I read was that the richest pay on average about 10%.

Self employed pay as little as they can too. My dad did part time consultancy work from home for a number of years. It bought him in a tidy little sum to add to his pensions etc but technically he made a loss every year thanks to a good accountant.

It’s how it is; human nature, despite those who collect taxed being told early in Cameron’s ghastly tenure that ‘all people are honest’ as a prelude to getting rid of 1000s of tax inspectors. Later, they said serious crime was not a priority - as a reason to getting rid of the investigators who were going after really bad people for tax if they couldn’t get them for their actual crimes.

Regarding what oversight Reeves has, it depends on the PM. Osborne was left alone by Cameron. Hammond was not by Theresa May who insisted on approving every word of everything that came out of her government including fiscal event stuff. Her micro managing caused inertia and absolute chaos. That’s not anecdotal - I witnessed it.

As for Starmer, he may not be charismatic. I couldn’t care a less. Blair had charisma and lied. Johnson had it, lied and was an absolute jerk. Cameron had something about him beyond an oily face, but he was a self serving numpty who wouldn’t have known a good decision if it came and hit him on the head.

So enough of charisma. Don’t care. But is Starmer any good? Despite his love of an expenses claim, a freebie and Arsenal, I sense, unlike Johnson, he’s a decent man. But does he have the skills to be PM? Does he have the courage and decisiveness needed? I’m not sure.

Time will tell and after ridiculous circus under the Tory clowns we need some stability, so give him time. He might take an easy decision and move Reeves on, mind, who looks clueless. And zealot Milliband while he’s at it.

If I inherited a £4m asset, I would be happy enough to pay 300k tax on it, mortgaged over 25 years.

Hope you enjoy the 65-100 hour weeks for a low & steadily diminishing income* (*unless you're a pig or poultry farmer; & the latter have now recently been hit by avian flu to knock them back too).

With both Corbyn & Starmer I had a bad feeling as soon as they appointed their respective Chancellors that things then weren't going to go well for Labour.

I think it'd actually be far from an "easy" decision for KS to boot RR - the much vaunted first female Chancellor etc., he'll be derided for it by all political opponents - though I share your view of her as "clueless", sadly.
