Bournemouth fans booing their team at FT on 12:44 - Apr 3 by MattinLondon | That line of thinking sounds quite elitist to me - do people really not want smaller clubs to better themselves? If for example Mansfield were suddenly backed by a huge pension fund would they still be saying ‘nah, still a tinpot club? And let’s face it we don’t like it like when fans of big clubs appear to be condescending towards smaller PL clubs. |
I think you too are missing the context a bit. I don't remember similar comments about Brentford for example. It's not that they're a small club that's risen up the leagues ( without the stadium and fans to match) but how they've been portrayed by the media whilst how they did it is largely ignored.

For me, there should be a natural gravity in football in that if you are getting 10k fans a week you shouldn't be able to sustain in the PL......bigger supported clubs should rise a bit easier and lesser supported clubs should fall unless they can grow their fanbase to be commensurate to their standing [to an extent] No one is expecting Bournemouth to build and sell out a 75k stadium - but after 8 or 9 PL years, there should have been enough growth in fanbase [Dorset population where they are only PL club is 785k] to build a 30k(?) seater stadium, and fill it. It's a wasted opportunity for the club to have grown their fanbase, presumably kids growing up there are still more likely to got Southampton or Portsmouth games as can't be many tickets floating about That the TV money allows you to not even consider growing fan base and sustain in PL makes it a bit wrong for me, and lessens the PL as a product

"...PL as a product" I think this is the crux of things - it should be a league based on merit first and foremost. Personally, I love it when smaller teams do well, because its against the odds.

It's not against the odds though, that's the point really.

Fair enough - i see why you say that in Bournemouth's case, although for me, I'm not sure I agree. I'm more thinking of the likes of Luton, Burnley, Huddersfield, you, us etc...

Against the odds by giving teams over £100m a season just to be in it?

I'm not sure I understand... It's more about getting there and staying there (in the prem). Afterall, lots of clubs have chucked money at promotion and failed. If a smaller club manages to stay, despite having much lower matchday income, then isn't that even more impressive / earnt?

Despite my name, I don't live in Bournemouth any more but I think there are potential plans to move stadium They've built a fairly impressive training ground recently and may well move a new ground to somewhere around there I have no idea how big that would be but their fanbase must be growing a fair bit, the area has grown immensely Much like Colchester with us, they'd have previously lost a lot of support to Southampton

Yeah, i read the other day they have a stepped plan to increase their capacity to 26k. A similar size ground to lots of teams.

From what I gather they are increasing the Vitality to 20k over a 3 season period, but no date as to when it is starting

But Bournemouth got there by matching or outspending everyone else, including some parachute sides, while generating a tiny income so it's not exactly a romantic tale of triumph against all odds. Matchday revenue these days in a comparatively small income source, it's all about the TV dollars so there's not much impressive about staying up with 10k fans. Most Prem sides could give their tickets away for nothing and still have a massive income.

I have no idea on the makeup of various clubs' incomes, but do know the big ones can take in huge sums from attendances. Then there's sponsorship and merchandising which will presumably be lower for the like of Bournemouth than for most. From where I'm sitting, judging a team's membership of the prem on attendances ignores sporting reality. https://www.statista.com/statistics/566666/premier-league-clubs-by-revenue/

For most clubs, gate receipts will be less than 10% of their income so it is irrelevant in that respect but it's a shame to me that a club can be a financial success without either winning anything or having a decent following. As a Norwich fan, I imagine that bothers you less.

That's the truth, but the media & the PL prefer the "plucky little Bournemouth" story, which also conveniently emphasises how open the "richest & best League in the world" is.

I was in an online meeting apologising for just about the worst typo anyone could ever make. (Serves me right for trying multitask!) Edit: think of another word for 'larger' and you'll guess. What a fcking dunce. [Post edited 3 Apr 15:47]
