I sailed on a super yacht last year. I was quite astounded by the lack of professionalism.
We headed up from Gibraltar to the North of the U.K.
I altered course due to some heavy seas, and the relief Captain came up shouting at me. I almost hit him.
The lack of understanding these yachties have is dangerous.
Our deckhands did a 4 day course, and then they were on board. No idea about knots, splicing, life saving appliances such as liferafts, lifebuoys, etc. They were not much more than cleaners, and that’s an insult to professional cleaners.
I would not be surprised to find that the construction/design of the yacht contributed. But there will have been a number of factors that ultimately caused the disaster.
Yachties are not proper seafarers, they can’t read the weather and the sea, they don’t know how to read weather charts, their approach to seafaring is appalling. |  |

As you say there will be a number of factors - not just one.
From my experience watertight integrity (or the lack of it) is an issue when vessels are alongside/at anchor/a buoy in sheltered waters and the resulting false sense of security that comes with the perceived relative safety of these.
I don’t profess to have know all the details of this particular case but like you Newcy I can give it a very educated guess from 40+ years (rather than just 4 days!) experience as a Marine engineer in the RN. [Post edited 15 Apr 19:53]

Totally different mode of transport, but I’d never get on a helicopter. I just don’t imagine the tour guide pilots have the required experience. As you point out with the boats/yachts |  |

I'm not keen on getting on a helicopter either, but for different reasons. I'd expect anyone flying one would be experienced enough... but helicopters themselves have the worst safety record of any mode of transport. | |
