No more UK general elections 14:01 - Apr 18 with 2664 views | DJR | Having spoken to my neighbour, I have it on good authority that Keir Starmer will be imposing martial law to prevent any more general elections and thwart Reform. And if you are hoping to pass on any thing to your children, you won't be able to because the World Economic Forum will ensure your assets are seized. There was more in the same vein, but it is par for the course, given the conspiracy theory nonsense he spoke of during Covid. He and his wife have clearly gone down a rabbit hole, and it is frightening just what people are exposed to, and believe, on the internet. I might add that he owned his own travel insurance broking company, so at face value he ought to be a bit more savvy than this. [Post edited 18 Apr 14:39]

No more UK elections on 14:07 - Apr 18 with 2578 views | CaptainAhab | These people are terrifying. And even more terrifying, they are everywhere. The bloke opposite me genuinely believes the earth is flat and has proof ( a photo he took where there is a cloud behind the sun). He also went fully down the rabbit hole during COVID. Worst thing is he is so adamant, and has done so much "research", he's impossible to argue with. Smug prick too.

Female half of friends of mine who moved to Aus 15 years ago, about 5 years ago seemed to suddenly disappear down this kind of rabbit-hole with her postings on Facebook (the only contact I had with her as they regularly changed emails & phones). Couldn't believe anyone could change so much - but eventually realised it was probably Alzheimers orother dementia creeping up. Similar thing happened with another old friend living in Germany.

Ah yes, the old 'clouds behind the sun' thing, rather than the way less plausible 'the sun is so bright it makes it look like the clouds are behind it but they're not really'.

My neighbours haven't lost their marbles but coincidentally with my OP is the following article suggesting older people are susceptible to online nonsense. https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2025/apr/18/far-right-online-content-c

To use a Biblical metaphor, perhaps it's a case of the blind leading the blind.
No more UK general elections on 19:04 - Apr 18 with 1623 views | DJR | I've just remembered the most disturbing thing my neighbour told me, namely, that there are enough military-age Muslim males in the UK to take over the country. The fact that such Islamophobic hate is circulating on the internet and people like my neighbour are lapping up, and passing it on, is very worrying, and doesn't augur well. we have a lad like this at our gym who was worried about government's wanting to put microchips in us I said if you worried about privacy, you better be burning that mobile you have got When you dig into the 'research' they're doing, it harps back to evangelical American grifters essentially and it's very coordinated, organised and sinister from the people behind this nonsense

I think it's more the case that Labour needs to stop losing core votes to Greens, Lib Dems by trying to out-Reform Reform in Grimsby and Yarmouth. Their strategists seem clueless.
No more UK general elections on 21:28 - Apr 18 with 1265 views | Bigalhunter | This resonates quite alarmingly. Our window cleaner, who’s faithfully ensured the light pours in through wonderfully streak-free panes for almost twenty years, has changed quite markedly in the years since covid. He happily admits he spent a lot of time during covid lockdown ‘learning and researching’ The lovely guy I’d happily spend thirty minutes with, sharing a coffee and a couple of shortbread biccies on the patio, has morphed into a frightening parody of everything that is wrong with the dark web. Putin’s right because Ukraine commit atrocities that aren’t ever reported. Israel are defending the world from sinister forces. Immigrants will gradually erode everything that is truly British. Trump and Musk will sort out a fairer world order. The BBC are a form of national indoctrination that hypnotise the nation with the Big Ben chimes. He’s recently and proudly added a Union Jack spray job to the bonnet of his van and I now find myself actively avoiding any interaction with him on the last Friday of every month, as it just depresses me. Wife jokingly reckons we keep him on until he shows up in a Norwich shirt…. [Post edited 18 Apr 23:46]

I think there’s a link between lower incomes and a greater likelihood of believing conspiracy theories. Whether that correlation is also a causation, I’ve no idea. Education might be more important, which does tend to also relate to income. I can’t be bothered to look it up now though as I’ve got a 5am start

That’s just one of an increasingly long list of his phobias. My wife’s hertitage is Persian, my father was Palestinian (he knows this) and she just laughs off his theories and happily chats nonsense with him. He does the windows at the surgery where she’s a GP partner which is how we ended up persuading him to do the windows at our house. Other odd thing is, he goes abroad for his holidays at least three times a year and believes in integrating fully into local cultures. Been to Dubai, Bali, China and Gambia from memory, in the last couple of years. ‘I’m in their country, I follow their rules and cultures. They can do the same in my country.’ He now has a contract with Bristol City Council, cleaning swimming pools and various council run buildings. He claims he spent the first few months avoiding the council’s clean air policy charge on his diesel van by unscrewing his front number plate and sitting it on his dashboard. Just can’t fathom him out, really. [Post edited 18 Apr 23:44]

Your life is enviably un-dull! Inconsequential fun fact - my second deployment in my first 'proper' job was as a secretary in what was then the Persian section of the BBC World Service at BH. Hugely interesting, though at 18 I was too young & politically unaware to really appreciate it.
