Ipswich v Arsenal 08:38 - Apr 20 with 2477 viewsnoggin

The worst trouble I have seen in Ipswich was sometime in the early 80s. If memory serves me right, Arsenal had played a game in Europe midweek and a lot of their fans arrived in Harwich or Felixtowe before the league game at Portman Rd.

There was huge numbers of gooners and trouble broke out in the North Stand and spilled on to the pitch. Then after the game a huge mob ran amok in town, fighting the few brave Ipswich lads who were definitely game. I was a skinny teenager at the time and it was the first large scale football violence I had witnessed. My memory has faded over the years, and so it might not have been as bad as I remember. It's funny what sticks in one's mind. The most vivid memory is of a punk, complete with huge mohawk, being escorted around the pitch and past us in Churchman's.

Does anyone remember that day?

Absolutely but it was what it was, at the time.

Oct 81’, following on from April. More in Nov 83’, a Willis window got broken, I got slung out of Churchmans ( I’d had enough pre match, thought it’d be quite!), some of theirs came in at half time, Kingfisher chaps sorted them, in the melee me and an old school mate got hauled out! Self defence officer! Out we went! In the ensuing court cases another Chantry lad and one of their lot , got quite pally, beers in the Black Horse at the end of the day!

Can remember some of them invading the pitch from the Portman Stand after Charlie Nicholas scored, would've been 84. Don't think that's the same game as don't recall much else, though as I would've only been 11, wasn't getting caught up in that sort of stuff.

1993 for the cup tie however. Lively day and then some.

I didn’t see it, but there was trouble on Norwich Rd after the FA Cup quarter final in 1993.

I went past on the bus a few minutes after it must have happened as there was police milling about everywhere and people in various states of disarray.

I had to go up to A&E with a mate because of that. Not through any of the fisticuffs but the silly sod b***red his ankle up falling off the kerb in the melee.

Had to practically carry him up Orford Street to meet the cab as Premier or Hawk (whoever was called) had got wind of what was going down and wouldn't come within a mile of the area.

It may have been the same punk I saw just after the match. I got on the Number 11 bus pretty quick after the match, the line of buses would wait on Portman Walk (I think it was). Could see people running up and down Portman Road then a punk with a large mohawk jumped on the bus. He had a look around, realized it was full of old codgers and us young 'uns and tore off.

That stuck in my mind but I can't remember anything about the match.

Wasn’t there a bit of trouble after the Priskin goal game? If I remember rightly there was a bit of a melee out the front of the old Drum and Monkey?

They attacked the Hare and Hounds whilst it was full off Ipswich lads , got really lively along Norwich Rd , ordinary shoppers scattered everywhere to avoid the trouble, sheltering in nearby shops .

Not really… a few of theirs were fronting people up but compared to what the tales of yesteryear were, I didn’t see a single punch thrown.

Fair enough, probably more verbals than an actual melee then. Just seem to remember walking back to there and a bit of commotion going on!

My dates may be a bit out, but I seem to remember that for a few seasons after our '78 cup final victory, Arsenal would come into the West Stand 3 or 4 times a game (possibly from Churchmans). To be fair, the West Standers done well and more than stood their ground.

It was like the wild west. I remember lots of broken pool ques scattered around on Norwich road from the H&hs. I was only about 14 and in the middle of it all. The co-op locked their doors and wouldn't let me in, haha. Those were the days.

I went to that game with a Uni mate who was an Arsenal fan. He was close to soiling himself as we walked back along Norwich Road, don't think he had seen much trouble before. There was blood in the St Matthews St underpass after the game as well.
