We are consistently overrun in midfield 19:19 - Apr 20 with 1988 viewscbower

Most of the division have better players than us. They have benches stacked with quality too. It is right to say we have competed in a good proportion of games but even in those games at tge 70 minute mark we have loked goosed and succumbed to the pressure too many times. The 4321 formation has not worked for us in the Premier League. Our two in midfield gets overrun either in terms of numbers or just sheer physicality, speed and strength. The three behind the lone striker have all too often been too lightweight and the formation leaves our striker so isolated.
Today, we actually looked more solid 2nd half with 10 men as we went 531. The tgree in midfield were not so overrun. Just imagine if Delap had beenablecto join Hirst in a 532. We might have actually posed some threat. 4231 works when you are the dominant side. We have rarely been that side this season but our shape hss not reflected this often enough.
Just my opinion though.

"Consistently overrun in midfield"....yip, we are that. ......Wonder if it's anything to do with McKenna's one dimensional tactic of plsying just 2 in midfield?

Midfield has been a real problem all season. Only Cajuste up to this level and he has struggled to play 90 mins for most of the season.

Midfield has been a relative weak spot for a while. Even down in League One, teams could break through us without midfield laying a finger. They just didn't do it very often.

Will clearly be an area of focus in the Summer, as it was in January when we tried to spend a load of £ on Flynn Downes.

It must be hard playing CM for us at the moment. Enciso consistently running with the ball and giving it away allowing teams to attack through the spine at pace.

I think one possible 'benefit' of the way it has all panned out this season and the last two a bit, is that it has created an absolute and unavoidable need to redo our central midfield and, therefore potentially revamp the whole team. Two loanees, two aging declining great pro's, and whatever Taylor offers. No amazing, build-the-system around them type player, so get two or three young expansive, possibly expensive, beasts in and get them up to speed and bossing the show.
Simple. Right..?!

You are right we have been outplayed by better sides especially since Christmas.

Is that a massive surprise given every other team has paid around £100M or more extra for their squads than us and on top of that we have missed 5 or 6 of our best players for about half the season or more.

It will be an easing in process I imagine

Good players tend to bed in faster than poor ones, I reallt hope we go out and get the best players at this level and build again

Alcohol is the answer but I can't remember the question!

Oh definitely. It won't be instant. But in a way that's fine and potentially the natural process too, given the squad and changes that will happen. Morsy still there but maybe one good championship season left, and Taylor a relatively solid settled player, can be some sort of solidity and base level, with new players fitting in and around them, before roaring us on to new heights once they've learnt the ropes. So simple!

Nope. It's been apparent all season, probably against Saints and Leeds last season too. Ashley Williams on MotD has just said that KM probably needed to make adjustments to his style for Premier opposition as we have consistently been too easy to play against. He's spot on.

Indeed. KMc has been pretty flawless in his time with us but this season has hopefully been a wake up call to be more flexible, certainly if we want to play at this level. Like for like subs to fit a system that is getting pulled around the park doesn't work.

I'm not advocating hoofball but occasionally trying Hirst and Delap together or just changing the starting formation rather than the personnel may have paid off slightly more.
