Delap a lucky boy yesterday 08:45 - May 4 with 2900 viewsChrisd

Lucky to escape a second yellow card IMO. Just plain daft from him after being booked minutes earlier. You could see he was looking at the defender and wants to hurt the player. Just so stupid from Delap, many officials would’ve given him a second yellow card for that challenge and he couldn’t have had any complaints.

My memories of Delap, will be the following.

Pace
Strength
Blistering shot when he gets it off
Head down and run for goal from the half way line and trying to beat the whole opposition on his own
Not a team player
Diving
Macho approach trying to confront the opposition the whole time.

I’d rather keep Hirst….

I wouldn't necessarily agree with all that, but agree, I think Hirst is a better fit. Him up front with Ogbene, Chaplin and Szmodics (with Burns, Hutchinson and Philogene to be the last 20 minute impact subs). Watch out Championship...

Was daft challenge bearing in mind what had happened in the last two matches. A third game down to ten men in the first half would have been diabolical.

No guarantee that Ogbene will be the same player after such a nasty injury.
If you think Hutchinson (or Philogene) will be happy to be an impact sub in the Championship, then think again.

I'll remember him as one of the best strikers we've had in 20 years. When he pulls on an England shirt after a handful of appearances for ManU, Chelsea or whoever II'll probably ponder on what might have been.

He has tremendous potential that is true. But this season Town have sorely missed experience in the team. McKenna has continued with Delap throughout the whole season and benched our more experienced striker despite being fits from late December. Delap burst 9ntso the scene as an unknown, and scored spectacular goals throughout the first half’s of the season, clubs have worked is game out now and he has had little similar effec5 through the second half of the season.

I don’t doubt at s8me point he will go on to be a bit hit and play for England, but he’s quite a way short of that I feel atm. We’ve need a forward who can integrate with the other forwards and baring people into the game. Hirst is by far the better player at this point in time to do this I feel. But he’s been benched by McKenna.

We all know Delap is off in the summer, but we needed Hirst in the side much earlier in games than the paltry 8-10 mins he has largely been given coming off the bench. You can’t score goals, sat on the bench! Perhaps had McKenna not continued with a less effective Delap in the second half of the seas9n, and used Hirst more, who knows, we may well have had more of an overall forward line threat and got more points than we have? McKenna hasn’t even tried a combination at some point in the game of playing both players, because he’s so fixed in his tactical approach.

When Delap leaves, as he will, I wish him well. But it’ll be interest8mg to see how much *ame time he gets at these bigger clubs, or will he become a bit part player off the bench? FWIW, I think his progression would actually be best served by staying at Town another season, maybe two. But we’d most definitely lose Hirst, who won’t want to be a bench warmer here another season.

McKenna, is an excellent younger manager but he has shown his limitations at some points this season, and I hope he learns fr9m this PL season as much as the players.

It was never a yellow card in a million years

Totally disagree. Everton made too much out of it. Pickford should have been booked for sprinting out of his goal.

If Pickford was booked every time he sprinted out of goal he would have got 3 yellow cards in that match!

The only reason he’s lucky is because he gave the opposition player to roll around like he’d been shot when there was nothing in it - fortunately the ref could easily see through it

Not sure we are thinking of the same incident - this was near the halfway line, Hirst just ran into him full pelt and got a yellow card. The defender went after him and also got a yellow card.

SB

The defender (Branthwaite) didn’t get a card, which was very weird, he ran after Hirst and pushed him twice!

The second incident wasn’t a yellow card at all. What annoyed me more was Pickford running at pace towards the ref - obviously he was trying to get Delap sent off. Thought that type of behaviour was supposedly being clamped down on.

I’m putting it out there, Jordan Pickford is an utter tool. A bang average keeper unless in an England shirt, just about dramatises every save he makes and as you say, the first sign of anyone touching an Everton player he’s running at the ref from 40-50 yards away to make a case.

Berk of a bloke.

There’s no intention in Delap getting the ball, he just wants to leave his mark on their defender due to the earlier yellow card incident. Sorry, I’m not going to agree with you on this one, it’s clear as day.

I understand where you’re coming from, as he certainly likes the battle. It’s part of the game really. One of the best strikers England has ever had, Alan Shearer, had more elbows than a centipede. Delap is right on the edge though and a bit of a walking card. Potentially he could be a great player though. I’d rather have him on our side than ply against him.
