Is still calling it the “Champions League” become a joke? 09:45 - May 9 with 1170 views | melbs_itfc | Each season there are multiple teams from all the top leagues that qualify for the Uefa Champions League. Whilst the competition’s format seems to regularly expand with the aim of including even more teams and games. No doubt with the purpose of increased revenue for the clubs and Uefa alike. However, next season incredibly there will be SIX teams that will enter the competition from the English Premier League, including whichever of Man United and Spurs that win the Europa League (currently 15th and 16th respectively in the EPL). So realistically, we all know the UCL is moving closer to a Uefa Super League in all but name. So why continue with this charade of still calling it the “Champions League” and just be done with it, rebrand, and call it something that actually resembles what it has now evolved to become?
Is still calling it the “Champions League” become a joke? on 09:52 - May 9 with 1123 views | Pinewoodblue | Now that teams no longer move down, at the knockout stage, to the second tier competition it is a much easier competition to win. If the old rules still applied Man City would have been in from thr knock out stage.

Is still calling it the “Champions League” become a joke? on 09:55 - May 9 with 1112 views | Vaughan8 | Why is this suddenly becoming an issue? It's not been just the "champions" for so long now it's all a bit odd how now its being discussed (not blaming you, just its all in the media too). Is it because Spurs/Man Utd are going to get in despite them being hopeless in the league? I've disliked it when 4 of the big leagues got in it. Its basically pushing the "Minnow" teams out. How are they ever supposed to be able to compete? But we know its all for money and more now to save there becoming a "super league" Its a bit embarassing for the other leagues that out teams in the bottom 6 can both get to the final. I also don't like it when people say things like "Nottingham Forest won the Champions league". They didn't. they won the European cup which lets face it, was a totally different competition to te money making thing it is now. Did we win the Europa League? Most certainly not!

It's because next year there will be SIX English teams in the Champions League, which is almost one third of the flipping Premier League. It's so much more ridiculous than it used to be, and is surely just the European Intergalactic Bobbins League by another name.

It depends what you mean by uncompetitive. In the pre-Champions League era there there were some surprise winners. And if it had stayed like that, there would have been less of an inevitability about the teams whose financial position was reinforced year after year by European TV money. It has an impact on the domestic game as well as the European competition itself. But regardless of the quality of the tournament, the OP's question was about the name. It shouldn't be called the Champions League, it should be called the European Super League, because that's what it is (except that I don't consider it very super). They even have a quasi league table for the group rounds these days.

Their way of having a "European League" without actually having to have one. [Post edited 9 May 13:08]

It was first called the "European Champions Clubs' Cup" in 1955, although in the inaugural season the participants were selected by French football magazine L'Equipe & only 7 of the 16 clubs were national champions. Unsurprisingly, the name was quickly shortened to "European Cup". Funnily enough, in the second season all the clubs were national champions allow they bent the rules to allow Real Madrid to play (sound familiar?). I personally am not remotely offended by the name - much more so by the names of pointless, tin pot trophies such as the "European Super Cup" and, like others, by the Football League calling its second division "League One".

I agree that it makes more sense to call it the European Super league. However, that may get a little confusing as there is already a European Super Cup, that if I’m not mistaken is a one off match of the winners of the Champions league and Europa League! So my suggestion would be to rebrand the Champions League and call it something like the European Premier League? Which in my mind it already is in all but name.

It’s all part of the patronising “softening” of language because apparently humans have become too fragile to survive having worries anymore, they’re “concerns”; and it’s similarly been deemed necessary to protect our sensitive souls from the reality that we’re being relegated to the second tier, so it’s called the ‘Championship’

Players want massive wages il the top players want a quarter of a million a week money has to come from somewhere. Now they want 64 teams in world cup I say 32 is ample I actually like a little break then I look forward to August.
Is still calling it the “Champions League” become a joke? on 09:26 - May 10 with 287 views | Smoresy | I'm alright with the name because the tournament delivers the Champions of Europe for that season, how I see it. Those latter stages are phwoar - pinnacle of our game, much moreso than a Euros or World Cup. I guess it was common in the original format for the Uefa League to feature better sides than the CL, which feels topsy-turvy to someone who only remembers the newer formats. But it is so bloated now and I only tune in around the QFs.

This was never the case when that was the format. Unfortunately the champions league and its distribution of cash has ruined football as a competitive sport in most of Europe. There are multiple countries where the same team qualifies each season and now has an unbridgeable financial advantage over their domestic counterparts. And there is no way back from that. Whilst the quality of football on the latter stages is off the scale good, it’s served to reduce European football to a closed shop.

The same effect has got into amateur sport. At Radlett Tennis Club, there are a series of singles box leagues, graded on ability, with promotion & relegation. What should be Division 7 is actually called "Intermediate B", presumably so that the rubbish tennis players feel better about themselves.
