Academy issues? 12:54 - May 27 with 12469 viewsportmanking

Tweet by the ITKer/sh*t stirrer on X 'misssuffolkblue':

"Suffolk lad and ex ITFC coach. Interesting appointment, but bigger news on the horizon when one of our greatest coaches is set to join them as well to work in their academy after numerous fall outs with Ashton over the lack of funding into our academy".

Lack of funding into academy? How does that compute with a Category 1 bid? And who is the 'greatest coach'?!

EDIT: Initial sentence is talking about Manning to the scum.

Not sure of that, but there is no doubt it will take some time to prise the Canaries' webbed feet off mid and north Suffolk in particular. Will be easier when we are cat one.

My first thought was Bryan Klug, but surely he wouldn't make the move across the border?

He's 64 and still 'Head of Coaching' at Town. Whatever that tag means.

But he's been part of the club for 40+ years, surely he wouldn't go there.

Well it doesn’t, does it? So it will either be proven to be true or false fairly quickly

No I don’t think he will.

But if it is him who she is suggesting is off then I don’t think it’s a massive loss given his career will be coming to an end shortly.

As good as he is he isn’t going to be around much longer regardless.

I would guess they have been trying to cut day to day costs to fund the planned improvements. Trying to bump up the capital fund. We really have not seen too much top talent coming through the last few years.

Spending on academy is a deduction for PSR and we are constantly reminded how cash rich the club are

I would think that with the push for Cat 1, succession planning has been in place for Klug for at least a year, if not longer. I very much expected him to be 'moved sideways' as we transitioned into Cat 1, so it's quite likely that changes were already planned for this summer.

I'd say, nothing to see here - move on. It's just mischief making for those against some of the Town personnel.

That Twitter poster has definitely evolved from ITKer to mischief-maker in the last couple of years. I don't know whether they have an axe to grind against Ashton or the US owners, but it certainly feels that way by the tone of their more recent posts.

Do you think the club is serious about the Academy and Cat 1? I know he’s said it but a bit like rebuilding the ground over and above a makeover, is Ashton/the owners really interested? Especially with relegation.

The owners have by and large done what they said they’d do so I’m guessing they probably are but I’d be interested in others’ views.

Evans certainly wasn’t and Ashton, when they were doing forums in the early days, never thought it was worth it.

Not sure what your point is?

Last season Norwich invested £4.8 in ALL infrastructure, including new first team recovery facilities which can't have been cheap. They 'hide' their academy investment in that figure, so I can imagine the academy figure is less than £3M (maybe significantly).

Last season we put £3.8M into the academy (explicitly academy only), a figure that has increased significantly since the owners took over. I'm sure the figure will increase again for this season just ending, and will continue to grow (especially given the new facilities being developed).

So where is the investment incentive to move from Town to the budgies?

Cat 1 status wouldn't guarantee future success, but, as it currently stands, our academy throughput has been pretty woeful so, surely, not something they can afford to ignore since we can't do a Brentford without that scouting network in place.

Well my point was that there was no incentive to cut day to day expenditure to build up the capital fund which the comment I replied to put forward as a possible reason for it

The increase in investment would seem to suggest they are at least serious to some extent - otherwise why push up costs (225% in the past couple of years)?

Agreed - the available evidence doesn't really support the suggestion that there is any cost saving involved.

Cat one means our players would be playing against Premier League teams and the likes of PSG and other European clubs at tournaments more regularly than we currently do.

Brentford are a terrible example to use, whenever the key context is around academy.

They are very much a club who have an academy open out of obligation rather than any intent to promote a player to the first team, or even professional football.

She/they is an odd one for sure. Clearly has some inside into but the tone suggests they’re a disgruntled ex employee. Always a negative outlook.

Interesting reading and context above, thanks all. Easy to paint Ashton in a bad light but he may also have decided that the current academy processes he inherited are not fit for purpose and certain cuts are justified. Clearly the club is pushing for Cat 1 and in the mix to get it so they are doing something right.

It's interesting as I believe the club still don't know who that user is so proceed with caution I think.

That said, they have been right on a few issues so they've got form for sure.

The academy issue still perplexes me, surely it's not hard to get right.

As for "one of our greatest coaches" they could be referring to Adem Atay maybe as he's out of work at the moment I believe.
