Cheers. Definitely don't want more stuff like trailing cables to trip over. Been looking at something called SpeedBoost that's been bigged up, but don't know how independent 'UKCE' website is.

Best way to extend wifi signal, please, TWTD hive mind? on 18:22 - May 27 with 1253 views | DarkBrandon | If you can afford it I’d get one of these without hesitation: https://www.tp-link.com/uk/home-networking/deco/deco-p9/ I have this, and it works superbly. Our house has lots of thick brick walls so the signal propagation is appalling. This system uses either WiFi or your power line (mains) network for communication between the nodes. You don’t need the Powerline option if you are only extending your main node a small amount. As mentioned above BT will give you a few extenders free of charge, but I wasn’t impressed with ours, hence the tp link stuff we bought

Best way to extend wifi signal, please, TWTD hive mind? on 19:41 - May 27 with 1041 views | The_Flashing_Smile | I'm only in a split-level flat but I found the best solution for me was to move the router (was by the door) to the centre of the flat, just by getting a longer cable. Got long lengths of plastic cable-hidey to run it through along the walls and look nice. Tried those things you plug into your plug sockets to boost the wifi but didn't make a discernible difference and sent them back. Centralsing the router (and popping it up high on a wall) did the trick. Dunno if that would help with 3 floors though.

I used to use TP link mains based repeaters but they all eventually blew up. The usual fault was the big capacitor, but not easily fixable without the right tools etc. Have had a Tenda Mesh system for two or three years now and it works fine. Even have a module out in the garden room. You can add to the network as required.

Can't do that unfortunately, as router needs to be up against window to get signal from dish on roof (it's a Local Area Network system via line of sight mast) but thanks anyway.

How old is the wiring in the house? If say 2000 or later and no complex setups such as multiple consumer units... then Powerlink adapters would be my recommendation. Been using them for years with no issue bar on tplink dying which amazon replaced for free. Otherwise Mesh systems are great too. I bought a TPlink Deco x5 set for my new abode last year. Works well and then to setup a backhaul link to boost overall speed used my powerlink adaptors to connect the satellite to the main unit. In short, wired is almost always much better than wifi...but who wants to chase network cables throughout their home. That's were powerlink comes in, and cheap enough to buy a pair of basic adaptors to test.

That's probably your problem. If the signal from the mast is weak, a mesh system won't help. Is there no fiber or cable where you live? This might be your best option. https://www.tp-link.com/en/powerline/ You can get Powerline extenders that create wifi hotspots in the rooms in which they are placed. The adapters require that all your rooms are on the same electrical wiring circuit. [Post edited 28 May 3:42]

To add, make sure your device is picking up the WiFI from the closest extender. We have Sky and I have a POD to extend the signal, but my laptop always used to default to the router despite the POD being closer - I switch off the WiFi on the laptop and back on again for it to pickup the POD.

Ah - that's brilliant, thanks. Yes, ext walls are 2 feet thick! & even some of the inner ones are 1 foot, incl. the half-basement. Looking into those Powerline extenders now, as they've gone onto new & improved versions since the article was written (looks like 2020, updated 2022). Fortunately all sockets are on the same circuit (rewired in 2013, Wicklow 👍). Guy from current provider has just rung & confirmed Powerline probably best for my needs - only the one pair to get basic connectivity to the half-basement, as any more could result in interference. If I want connectivity to first floor, then just add wifi extender/s. BT installed fibre-optic cable along the road 200m away a couple of years ago (while doing so managing to drill through our landline cables which were then out of action for 6 weeks!!). Always said I'd never go with them due to their incredibly poor CS with landlines, but the independent provider has also gone a bit downhill since outsourcing their sales & tech support phonelines, so might re-consider that in due course, esp as a BT bundle with landline would decrease my costs by c. £20/month.

Just bought this https://refreshcartridges.co.uk/tplink-tlwpa7617kit-gigabit-powerline/ Both kit & company got outstanding reviews, & cheaper with them than the dreaded jungle, including Royal Mail 24 hr tracked delivery :) Thanks again all 👍

I will never understand how these things take BT so long to fix. There are plenty of engineers sat around that could simply pull in another cable, blow in new fibres. I should know too, spent 21 years there!

The field engineers were always brilliant individuals, but let down by the company which, in my experience, is the worst 'legit' company I've had to deal with in my now pretty long life. One gave me his mobile no. so I could call him direct instead of waiting for official channels. I had over 100 faults in 20 years in old house, & no mobile network coverage back then, so it was a massive safety issue with nearest neighbour 500 yards away. Not always BT's fault - line was down once because pheasant shooting party peppered it with shot! but it then took BT 6 weeks to have a cherry picker available ... probably because privatisation meant profits were going to shareholders rather than on equipment ...
