As Deals Go was this BAD 19:07 - May 29 with 7612 views | OldFart71 | So apparently Delap goes for £30 million. So that's a £15 million profit ? In the words of a pantomime "Oh yes it is", sadly "Oh no it isn't" City apparently have a sell on clause of 30% of the £15 million profit, so £15 million now becomes £11.5 million. Is that really a good deal for a player that could get Chelsea 20 goals next season putting his value at the top end of the £100 million mark. Whilst I realise City may not have sold Delap to us without this clause did MA really protect Towns interests as £11.5 million isn't going to make much of a dent in the £130 million spent.

As Deals Go was this BAD on 10:04 - May 30 by Herbivore | I'd be surprised if we've triggered many of them to be honest. We'll find out eventually but I suspect we've paid £18m max, possibly less. |
Shows how far we've come that a profit of between 8m and 15m is seen as a huge issue. Sure, he will probably go on to bigger things and be worth a lot more in future but looking at these things with hindsight is never a good idea. There were plenty who thought it was the wrong signing and a huge fee when we bought him. SB [Post edited 30 May 10:14]

Yeah fair enough. But we certainly won't be getting £15m (- City's payout) I doubt

No, I imagine there might have been something like a payment after 10 goals, after 25 appearances, and such like but if I had to bet on it I'd say we've triggered less than half of the add ons.

Hard to say without knowing the ins and outs of his contract. The worst thing (with hindsight) was setting a 30m release clause but then it was unknown how he would kick on this season.

I imagine that's the sum they requested and we didn't have much wiggle room. It's double the initial fee we paid and I imagine we thought that in any scenario where Delap ends up worth more than £30m after a year, we've probably done well enough to survive and the clause then isn't an issue. If a few more of our £15m+ signings had done as well, we might have sent Spurs down, which would have been hilarious.

As Deals Go was this BAD on 08:45 - May 30 by OldFart71 | Funny how a question receives such vitriol from people. "As deals go was this BAD" I'd like to know where I personally said it was BAD. Yes I referred to the extra clause that not many knew about. We all knew the £30 million sell on clause and I did say would City have sold Delap to us. I remember back in the 80's where the Town sold Terry Butcher. Then a current England International. At the same time the Budgies sold one of their defenders who wasn't an International and sold him for more than Butcher. Whilst I appreciate that selling players is a swings and roundabouts situation where some will go for less than fans think they are worth and some will sell for much more. As someone said Bramble went for 6 million. From what I saw of the guy he couldn't pass a ball ten yards. But that's a personal opinion and others think differently. My apologies if I brought up a subject that had been through the wringer before. |
With reference to Butcher, that's the difference when you are in a position financially where you have to sell compared to one where you only sell if the fee is high enough. The same happened with Holland etc too. As for Bramble, he had his weaknesses but he was a Premier League quality defender. He went to a Premier League side for a good fee because we didn't want to sell and they were keen on him. Another issue with fees is how long is left on a player's contract because if they run it down, they end up realising no fee at all.

We were in debt to the tune of 1.5 million mainly the West Stand re-build and a tranche of the debt on it was falling due, so we were in a weak position.

Question marks may have helped!I mistakenly scan read it as you saying it was bad, and I’m probably not the only one. It could be worse. The release clause is higher than Frimpong’s and he’s currently at a higher level than Delap. I really wouldn’t worry about it. What affects us fans is how they build a squad with the PL money and what that new squad plays like.

The capitalising BAD didn’t help either! Someone mentioned Titus Bramble - all I’ll say is that he went on to have a very successful career in the prem, while we languished in the Championship. Says it all really!
