He took us further than a lot of his predecessors (with better talent and very favorable tournament draws) but fell short tactically when it mattered and was too slow to make changes. How we didn’t win against that aging Italian side on home turf I’ll never know. Clearly a very decent bloke and representative of his country though. Tuchel thus far does not excite me.

This 100%.

Switched off. Yearning for the days of the test card again.

Luckily I work Saturdays and wasn't even aware of the game until 3pm. Been bored with international football for years so chose not to watch it. End of season as well so just need a few months break from it all ( as no doubt the players do) before the championship.

Definitely won't be watching next week's match either.

They have all played a full season, and have a game which is so far below the level usually demanded, its not really surprising.

The season finished.

Time clubs and associations treated it as such.

Agree the game shouldn't have been played at this time.

However, since it was, I don't understand why he didn't play some of the younger players who would have seen it as an opportunity to be excited by rather than just the same old faces who clearly didn't want to be there.

Gibbs-White, Eze, Wharton etc etc would have relished the chance. Madueke is in a similar position and was our liveliest player, albeit that was a low bar.

We ended up with another right footed left back, a midfielder at right back (with the most creative right back in the world on the bench and another class attacking one at left back) and Jordan Henderson in the middle.

High hoped for Tuchel but I find it all a bit baffling so far.

No one watches international football now. Life and soul drained out of the team. The days of flags in cars and out of house windows long gone.

Totally and utterly incorrect.

Stopped watching England a while ago, unless it’s the final few games in a tournament.

Watching England is tedious and dreadful. No way I would watch any other country if they were that bad. I’m just not wasting my time watching them. And I’m someone who watched every home game last season 🤣

You can’t tell me an English manager could not do better than that , first time for years I have switched off England game through sheer boredom.

A bit of perspective from Jonathan Wilson. Also worth noting that Serbia could only manage a goalless draw against North Macedonia in the other group game. So weirdly from a qualification perspective it was a decent night.

If went have gone out in Gelsenkirchen against Slovakia that would have undoubtedly have been our worst tournaments in a long time considering the talent we had in that squad. It was seconds away but in general we looked pretty terrible in Germany outside a few big moments and somehow still could have won it. I arguably think our best tournament football under Southgate was his worst tournament result, Qatar.

Maybe it’s just where football is now but I’m a little bit concerned some of the young talent that has come through are more invested in their own profile, being at some of biggest clubs in the World than playing for their country. Germany was weird it seemed to be an us against the world kind of mentality as soon as a criticism came their way. He made the right call stepping aside, the ultimate nearly man, a shame.

Already early signs of still trying to fit them in positions they don’t play for their clubs is concerning though. Could see it going wrong under Tuchel, as he’s quite temperamental and outspoken but who the hell kmows, he’s only got 4 or 5 camps but I guess anything can happen by next summer.
