Fair play to the BBC, actually sticking up for a news presenter. on 18:03 - Jul 2 by Dubtractor | Yep. Incidents like this (the original script and the reaction to the correction) infuriate me. There are so many hugely important issues to address through EDI (DEI) initiatives, but this sort of incident just plays into the narrative from certain groups that it's all just woke nonsense. |
A valid point, but I think the face she pulled indicated she felt the phrase was demeaning to women, rather than indicating an anti-woke stance. If it was GB News they'd be going to town on it, but it was a mild-mannered BBC newsreader.

For the purposes of biology, they are not men.

It’s not about being polite or hurting feelings; it’s about facts and truth.

Fair play to the BBC, actually sticking up for a news presenter. on 16:08 - Jul 2 by Trequartista | Ha ha love it. Good for her. |
In a way I kind of agree, but as her correction actually came out of her mouth, I think it was misguided, as it implied the health warning applied to all women, not just those who are pregnant, so was actually a bit misleading (although the vast majority probably knew what she meant, there’s an obligation by newscasters to remain 100% clear I think). sure but you've jumped back to what the newsreader said, you'd made a subsequent point about trans men being pregnant.

but the point is that women's life experience is partly shaped by biology. adolescence, puberty, menstruation, fear of pregnancy, miscarriage, pregnancy, menopause, etc etc are all biological realities for women (clearly accepting that there is variation) and biology forms a significant part of the experience in life for most. to pretend that this happens to 'people' rather than to 'women' denies that biological reality and the life experience of women, and is seen by many as therefore insulting. 'people' do not go through these things, biological women do.

Not really, it implies men can be pregnant when they can't. I think women are more likely to be more offended than me, as the newsreader's face suggested.

As a woman, my personal take on that would be “so what?”. It doesn’t impact on me or my life, so If it helps them feel a bit better, good, no problem, I’m not insulted by their not having had to go through the whole “womanhood “process.

exactly, it is effectively erasing biological women as a separate and distinctive group. when the subject matter is something that only biological women can do that is misleading as well as insulting.

Fair play to the BBC, actually sticking up for a news presenter. on 18:50 - Jul 2 with 357 views | MVBlue | This whole thread has made me realise that the debate here was only prevalent in the social media world and extended on forums, because people wish to type at each other over digital text form where in the past it was a very small number of people not idealogical online posters debating endlessly over minority issues. The old world was far less debated on minority issues. Folks typing on their keyboard given a voice. Thats what the modern world has become.

For the purposes of sex (biology) they are not men, but for the purposes of gender they are. I’ve never understood why so many people get worked up about this.
