RJK Jr at it again 09:38 - Jul 5 with 1025 viewsStokieBlue

I was listening to a podcast which was discussing the fact that he is going to withdraw funding from GAVI, an organisation that vaccinates children around the world. The US historically provided 13% of their funding but RJK disagrees with their vaccine opinions even though his views are not supported by the science.

In fact his decision seems to be have driven by a 2017 study [1] which has been widely discredited.

"Gavi’s own estimates, reported by the New York Times, suggest the loss of US support may mean 75 million children miss out on routine vaccinations over the next five years and 1.2 million die as a result." [2].

Incredible that a decision taken by one man based on views that run counter to scientific consensus can cause so much hardship.

Further to that we have his lies about the measles vaccine routinely causing deaths [3] which has contributed to a huge rise in measles cases across the US. Even after this rise and deaths he downplayed the issue [4].

He's just not fit for the role and is going to cause lasting damage over the next 3.5 years.

The damage being done to UK soft power by this administration is off the charts. Not just him either. The USAID cuts are expected to lead to possibly as many as 14 million unnecessary deaths over the next 4-5 years according to one recent study. They’ll no doubt say why should they have to worry about anyone else.

I fear this isolationist selfishness coupled with the Big Beautiful Debt might make things harder for the USA in the near future, with regards to both buying credit and getting good repayment terms.

Their economy is already struggling against the euro and even GBP, in spite of their dragging of interest rate cuts.

We’ve got to be so vigilant that this doesn’t happen over here. We know people will vote against their best interests. We know the funding flows from the States and we know we have enough grifter politicians who are prepared to hurt people. We’ve already seen Reform import the anti-equality ideology and implement it in some of their councils. Some of the fringe Tories have been prone to conspiracies. Hopefully we won’t follow the same route, but it’s far from certain.

Whilst not ideological, UK is also cutting support to Gavi.

https://www.msn.com/en-gb/news/uknews/starmer-s-foreign-aid-cuts-will-lead-to-ex

Sir Keir Starmer’s foreign aid cuts have led to a huge reduction in overseas vaccine funding that could lead to an extra 365,000 deaths by the end of the decade, campaigners have warned.

Britain’s contribution to the Gavi international vaccine alliance has been cut by a quarter after the prime minister slashed the international development budget to fund a defence spending hike.

Aid charity, the ONE Campaign, said the “harsh impact” of Sir Keir’s cuts will lead to almost 400,000 additional deaths, less money to educate girls and an increase in deadly conflicts around the world.

Sad to see the country which put people on the moon in the 1960’s and contributed so much to science and technology regressing so quickly.

Hopefully social media has just given a voice to cranks you’d never have crossed before- anti-vax and other conspiracy nonsense SEEMS frighteningly prevalent.

Indeed, and the soft power vacuum will quickly be filled by authoritarian states like China and Russia who have increased influence in places like Africa. The US (and wider West) will find themselves isolated and without allies, lose access to trade, and cutting things like foreign aid will hamper development and increase the flow of migration.

I didn't realise that, a bit more research shows the cut to be about 25%.

Not a decision driven by anti-scientific views but still a horrible decision.

RFK is an idiot. Should be nowhere near any position of responsibility.
Shows how fecked up the USAis at the moment.
All the people who suspected this kind of thing might happen but still voted for Trump should be ashamed of themselves.
Those who have subsumed their own identity into Trumpism won't care cos they are gone.
We must not let the same thing happen here

It is absolutely incredible that the people in power would prefer to cause hundreds of thousands (millions?) of deaths rather than impose wealth taxes on the super rich.

Truly impaired.

RFK Jr is a total nutjob. Emperor Trump and his henchmen are all crazy people, though roadkill lover Kennedy definitely is on the podium for the nutter of the year awards. The harm they are doing inside and outside America is off the scale. Make America Great Again? Make America have a civil war again, more like.

A similarly horrific outcome, even if for different reasons. I’d argue that it’s still an ideological decision: the aid cuts were a political decision partly in response to rising nationalist and isolationist sentiment. It may not be a specific anti-vax ideology, but it’s still driven to some degree by a negative ideology.

Even more mind-blowing to consider that that;s what millions of people actively voted for.

He's a complete fruitcake isn't he. It's unfortunate in one way that amongst all the antivax rubbish, he actually has some reasonable views around food additives etc. It probably gives him a veneer of sense among some of the Trumpists.

When you highlight the stupidity of the guy I often find myself thinking that people can still choose vaccination, but of course in this case it is often not the case.

The poorest of the world don't have that choice and as you highlight, people, children will die. Not a few dozen, hundreds of thousands.

Ignorance in the individual is fine, but when it impacts on others it's a whole new ball game. And his appointment all for a few votes for Trump at the election.
