Newcastle offered him a pay as you play deal. There’s a reason for that. Why on earth would you want a player who used to be good if you have any ambition whatsoever? I get it from a player perspective. Nice little pension top up, no pressure, nice way to ease to retirement in a nice area. Jack Wilshere anyone? Same age as Callum Wilson. Had a bit of time out of the game so will have had time to rest what’s left of his body. I’m sure he’d relish the chance of a comeback and would fill that hole in midfield and do a bit of coaching on the side. Makes sense. No it doesn’t, washed up hasbeens are not what we need. You can get away with an old pro that once played at top level at the back (Wark, Mowbray), even keeper but anywhere else forget it unless you are assembling a vets team.

He’s a level above ability wise though, and a much better career than any of our younger players (that stay) will have. I’d rather our script was proven quality over young EFL players that aren’t good enough, and we have to sell if they show even a glimpse that they might be. Financially we 100% need to go up.., we have £70 million of deferred liabilities over three to four years from our ‘spending spree’ If we have to service that best on EFL revenue, there is no script. You’re right ling term, but in the context of what we need this season, he’d be better than anything in this division IF he’s fit. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

And there’s a reason why he turned it down. He knows that a club will come up with a juicy contract that isn’t pay as you play.

Indeed. I don’t blame him one bit. Wring every last penny out of a club while you can. Just as Chelsea were eventually able to mug off Everton with hopalong Broja, there’s always somebody out there who thinks they can get an old crock to ‘do a job’ or ‘resurrect a career’. Lee Chapman. £70k fee, two year contract for a bloke who could barely move at all. They had to re-seed the pitch where he’d been standing all afternoon after the few games he made the effort to turn out for. Like ‘great bloke Duggie’ he just stood there. West Ham, Chapman and his agent must have been rolling in the aisles when they heard we’d agreed terms. Agreed to be taken to the cleaners more like. Year in year out it happens ant so many clubs and we have a very long infamy list since Robsons time on that score.

Broja not off the table? Assuming you mean the treatment table, you’d be right. Simms? Coventry bought him for what is these days a small fee - £7m and he clearly wanted to go there. As far as I’m concerned, he can stay at Coventry. Looked for the most part slow and leaden. Had some good moments but a no for me if we are serious about the Premier League.
