I wonder if York City FC have received any flack for their new away shirt… 20:40 - Jul 12 with 2512 views | BLUEBEAT | It very much looks like the Norse Valknut, which symbolises death/sacrifice/afterlife but is probably best known for its reappropriation by the Nazis and numerous other right wing organisations (possibly because the root origination is from Germanic tribes). The club just describe it as a “stand out triangle pattern” but it has to be a salute to the Valknut, especially when you include other kit design factors like the Viking boat icon on rear of shirt and the spelling out of ‘YORK’ in runes on the home shirt. I respect them for acknowledging their strong Viking connections (we could do the same with Viking, Angles/Anglo-Saxon heritage etc when all this Sheeran stuff blows over) but is this particular sigil a bit too much? Or is it just fancy triangle patterns?

The sun wheel is incredibly important for Hindus but they can’t wear it in Europe without major grief. Flying the Union Jack and St George is too often equated with the very worst assholes too.

Previous place I lived, my Hindu neighbours frequently decorated their front doorsteps with swastikas at times of festivals.

That was my first thought. It’s brave of York to reclaim a symbol that’s been misappropriated by wangers. They risk getting some grief for it, but it needs doing. Agree on other flags/symbols you mention too.

Huh. Yes indeed. Friendly match against Salford abandoned in the 84th minute. What the feck is wrong with some people? We’re a quarter of the way through the 21st Century and this crap is getting worse. I’m convinced our species is going through reversed evolution. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/articles/cvgw37relnvo

Glad I wasn’t going crazy, been a long week and started thinking it was the other day. 😂 I’m sure I’m giving the knuckle daggers too much credit, but it seems very coincidental that there should be this link to nazi symbolism & their first preseason match season being abandoned for racist abuse.

Probably no link and just a coincidence. There’s been a pretty steep rise in racial abuse across all leagues, so it’s likely to be a coincidence. This symbol is similar to the Valknut but not quite the same. People may not be making the link, but who knows what goes through the tiny little mind of a racist.

York have had a bit of a repeated issue with a group of youngsters that have started following them regularly since they returned to the National League a couple of years ago. It’s not usually racial, just gobby kids that get a bit over excited. More than likely that one of these overstepped the mark. It sounds like they’d been giving Salford players some stick and then didn’t like it when they scored and gave some back.

The Union Flag has been reappropriated by the far right of this country. You aren't suggesting that it should never be used in design as a result are you?

I wonder if York City FC have received any flack for their new away shirt… on 08:00 - Jul 13 with 1013 views | DJR | This is what the Anti Defamation League (a US antisemitism organisation) says about it. "The Valknot or "knot of the slain" is an old Norse symbol that often represented the afterlife in carvings and designs. It is often considered a symbol of the Norse god Odin. Some white supremacists, particularly racist Odinists, have appropriated the Valknot to use as a racist symbol. Often they use it as a sign that they are willing to give their life to Odin, generally in battle. Non-racist pagans may also use this symbol, so one should carefully examine it in context rather than assume that a particular use of the symbol is racist."

You’d be wrong though https://www.britannica.com/topic/valknut It’s a well known neo Nazi symbol and while it shouldn’t be, you’re seeing people getting into Norse mythology and getting it tattooed without realising. Ironically that might be helping diminish its significance I guess.

Mullers. What in my post am I wrong about? That BB over analysed it by asking if York have recieved any flack over it? Or that the Union flag has also been misappropriated. Others have pointed out the exact same.

No reason at all. I don’t see it as over-analysis at all what with it actually looking like a Valknut symbol. What are you actually disagreeing about? That the pattern looks like Valknuts? That Valknuts are (sadly) associated with far right extremists? Or you’re just disagreeing about my wonderment as to whether the club have received any negative responses? Not much else to disagree about in the OP is there…? [Post edited 13 Jul 9:51]

BB, go back and read my post again, and then go back and read all the other posts that say pretty much the same thing. I’m just wondering what prompted your slightly passive aggressive response to me in particular.
