Matsuiwa- Our new midfied general? 22:55 - Jul 13 with 3041 viewsWicklowBlue

Let me start of with I love Morsy and what he and others have contributed to ITFC. Morsy is a consumate professional one who wears his heart on his sleeve and leaves nothing out on the pitch.

While the Derby rumours are in flight, watching the reel below, I can't help but think Azor plays the Morsy role to a tee.

Maybe this is totally obvious but part of me is sad to see such a great servant who drove us to huge heights versus being excited about the next generation.

Crazy how similar his style is to Morsy. Easy to see why we signed him.

As well as being younger he looks like he has a bit more pace and possibly a better passing range so I guess it’s part of the natural evolution. Hope Morsy sticks around for one more year though even if he doesn’t end up being a regular starter.

My hobbies include being quiet during trips, clapping with songs, and diabetes.

Agreed, of course the highlights always shows the best of players but it hit me straight away the likenesses.

Then I focused on the passing range and quality, both very similar in terms of passing through the lines. But perhaps Azor seems to be a bit quicker and more accurate. Hard 5o tell as different leagues and opposition.

I got the impression he was more similar in style to Massimo. More progressive passing and close dribbling when going forward.

Styles might be similar but it would take a lot for a 27 year old coming in from abroad and being able to replace Morsy's standing in the side, take the ball off the keeper and CBs in tight positions (where most wouldn't), dig out teammates when they're underperforming etc.

Still think Morsy will comfortably start more games than not next season, assuming he stays. Surely he cannot end up at sodding Derby.

May I say... he does look a bit tubby. Could be an oversized shirt is distorting a ripped physique.
Not complaining... we've had Magic and Geraint Williams who were stocky midfield generals.

Looks part of exactly what we need in there and hopefully proves to be a good investment for us.

Azor looks fantastic, all round. Just going off that one video though, I'd say he tends to float rather than drive his passes, playing in a slower league presumably, so I think that's one area where KMc will want to tweak his game a little. Great buy though.

100%.

Morsy needs to be around during this transitional period we're having in CM.

Bedding in 3 new central midfielders, potentially from overseas, who have never played together or understand McKenna's system isn't going to end well.

We need his experience, leadership and ability to execute what McKenna wants on the pitch.

We'd be foolish to sell him and think the grass is greener

We have all the extra games in the Championship this season; the inevitable injuries and suspensions.

Unless Sam has decided to move on himself, would be crazy for the club to sell him on; Matusiwa would pick up so much from him, and having Sam to bring off the bench to see out a game would be like a cheat code at this level.

Sam sets the standards and intensity on and off the pitch; the few games where he hasn't been involved over the past couple of seasons seemed a bit flat to me...

Of course, you're not considering it from Sam's point of view.

Hypothetically speaking (*ahem*) if he was offered a 3 year deal in the Middle East or a 2 year deal with a 1 year option at Derby.... or just run down his contract here and go into summer 2026 unattached as a 35-year-old midfielder. It'd be a no-brainer for him to get security elsewhere, no?

I think many (easily done too) overlook the human and career aspects of a footballer. While he's likely earned decent money in his career, his recent trajectory probably masks the reality that he's only been on 'good' wages in the last few years. Therefore, securing his family financially for the future is probably a wise move for him.

Considering what he's done for this club, I believe he absolutely deserves that. Whatever he decides, he leaves as a recent legend and I hope whatever path he chooses next works out for him and his family in the long term.

P.S - I still hope he stays...

This is exactly it! I would be extremely happy for him to stay but he's given us so much and he probably needs stability in his twilight years. We are unlikely to be able to offer that to anywhere near the same level as him moving to a non parachute Champ club or a top league club abroad.

As sad as it is, the club cant cater for sentimentality. Sam seemed to struggle earlier last season when playing 90 minutes in every game. It may just be my opinion, but I felt he had a second wind towards the end of the season when he was used as much more of a squad player. I suspect he is not happy with that position in a team, and understandably wants more of being the first name on the team sheet. He clearly won't be getting that all of the coming season here, so (with a tear in my eye) he gets my blessing to find that elsewhere.

Depends on what he want's to achieve in the twilight of his career.
Personally, i think the club would do well to offer him a new 2 year deal.
He stays this year, gains promotion to the Premiership. Then, being the model pro he is, backs himself and his body to clock up 15-20 appearances in the Premiership, with Ipswich retaining safety. Mission accomplished. Something to look back on and be proud he led us there.

The other options are to fall through the lower leagues or chase Saudi money, where you're only ever flavour of the month for a short term of time.
I get what you're saying, but i think Sam has to back himself here. He's still invaluable to us. The club should recognise this and give him the contract he fully deserves !

From his point of view, yes.

Hard one for us as a club though. I get the 'after all he has done for us argument' but ultimately he signed a deal that expires next summer and our priority is to get promoted this season. I think it's hard to argue he doesn't improve our chances of achieving that goal. Even if we signed a better player on paper, his leadership, experience and nous in the middle of the pitch can't easily be replaced at all.
