Think if you spend over £237 you get a nice big paper bag for free.

Isn't it a legal requirement to charge for bags now?

You might be right, I think it's "single use bags" but that could mean anything I guess!

Comment of the day. Almost made me forget how mad I am that we're looking at signing a player in his forties.

Spends £236 on what is most likely a bag full of polyester, which cost about £30 to produce, then moans about the 40p paper bag! 😜

Just another thing companies can make a profit on and take the piss with. Was 5p when first implemented, now 30p in most places, 60p in others - the whole thing was to reduce use of plastic bags so paper bags should be free!

Most self service tills you can get away without paying for them.

You bought 15 minutes of Kalvin Phillips' time and they didn't give you a bag?

Correct anything not classed as reusable, that can be paper or plastic. So a paper bag when not classed as reusable (thus, single use) the retailer would need to charge for it by law.

I feel a bit for you there. Yes its only 40p, but surely someone with common sense would see that you have done your bit for the club today. A recycled paper bag too. That doesn't sound very great to me. The principle more than the expense.

Rubbish, it’s a commercial choice. From gov.uk:

3. When you’re not charged for a bag

Retailers are not required to charge you for the following:

- paper bags
- bags that are sealed transit bags used for alcohol and tobacco
- bags which only contain certain items, such as unwrapped food, raw meat and fish where there is a food safety risk, prescription medicines, uncovered blades, seeds, bulbs and flowers, or live fish

Next time OP take some raw fish to pop in the bag and you should be golden.

Have an uppie for that final paragraph. Although the pedant in me should point out that if the OP should put the raw fish into a plastic bag with the latest shirt and training kit, he should still be charged for the bag.

It was always going to happen. As soon as people got used to paying for disposable plastic bags they know they can charge extra for any type of bag.
