You’re not wrong. MissVic is a sister and always has to work 12hr shifts, starting at 7 in the morning. She’s usually in early and frequently works an extra hour at the end. She tells me that it’s not unusual for hr not to have had time to even go to the loo by 4 in the afternoon! I’m in awe of what she puts up with - verbal and physical ab from dement patients, getting showered in excrement. Concerned patients, breaking news of death of bad test results, etc, etc. I couldn’t do it!

Yes that sounds about right.I don’t know how they do it either tbh.

We had one nut job on the ward he had two security guards with him 24/7 as the nurses were scared to go near him. They even put him in a side room with two security guards he still managed to escape and run up and down the corridor screaming and shouting.

They moved me out of the room and put him in it,i then had to go where his bed was on the ward, the floor was caked in his grub where he’d thrown it about etc.

I asked where my buzzer was for my bed, they said they’d taken it away from him as they were scared he would strangle them with it.

You’d just drop off to sleep and he’d start up again, four days of that I was fecked 🤣

Junior is currently on an 8 week placement on a CAMS ward at the end of her second year of her degree course in mental health nursing. Yesterday she had to tend to a 15 year old girl in a pool of blood resulting from self harm. On a recent trip home we were first on the scene of a road accident and she was straight in having to care for 2 severely injured teenagers. So far the pleasure of serving the public has cost her £40k, just £20k more to go.

Don’t know if they have this kind of shift at your place, but my NHS A&E nurse neighbour has just been assigned one starting at 2pm and finishing at 2am

Seems beyond ridiculous.

That's probably an extra to cover an awkward summer holiday period where it's often busy in the afternoon through to just after midnight, in all fairness.

I quit often pull an 1800 to 0200 if I'm doing a bit of extra, for example.

Not going to be an exact science, but believe they rotate 3 and 4 shifts weekly, either 12 hours (night) or 13 hours (day). My wife at Addenbrookes did that rotation when she was a band 5-6.

Most full time nursing contracts are 37.5 hours a week. Depending on start times, allowance for handover and breaks most '12 hour' shifts are actually logged as anything between 10.75 and 11.5 hours. The occasional study or 'office' day for seniors generally come in between 7.5 and 8. So, there's not quite a round number of shifts in a four week roster period(rosters are worked out four weekly, salaries are paid monthly. Don't get me started) so it generally works out as 3/4 shifts a week.
