How long do you spend sitting in front of a computer every day? 10:12 - Jul 28 with 1297 views | ThisIsMyUsername | As the title says, I am curious to hear about the daily experiences of others when it comes to sitting at a desk for work. Since working from home at the start of the year I've become really conscious of how much more time I've naturally spent sitting in the same position at a desk every day. I do mix it up by going for regular breaks and/or walks of 10-15 minutes every hour, plus regular gym exercise during the week. On the positive, as I don't have a commute, it is less time spent sitting in a car every week, which balances it out to some extent. What do other people's days look like in terms of movement or lack thereof?

Like you I consciously try to be more active outside of work hours otherwise I would go mad.

So 8 hours a day. Yeah, it's a lot. I think I will begin doing some daily yoga/stretches/and use of my foam roller, on top of everything else.

Also bought a badminton set and a few cheap golf clubs from charity shop. Hoping to set up a small driving range with some netting.

How long do you spend sitting in front of a computer every day? on 10:52 - Jul 28 with 1112 views | IPS_wich | About 8-9 hours a day. Only break away from the screen is daily leadership meetings. Used to be about 11-12 hours a day in my old job on average. More so since Covid because I used to do a lot more meetings in person whereas virtually all are on Teams now. Have been pretty much in front of a computer for at least 4-5 hours a day, five days a week since 1996.
How long do you spend sitting in front of a computer every day? on 10:58 - Jul 28 with 1076 views | bsw72 | On average between 9-11 hours per day after breaks. I tend to have a couple of longer breaks (10+ mins) every few hours aside from bathroom breaks and maybe up to 25-30 mins for lunch. This is my choice, I enjoy what I do so tend to lose myself in it. I commute 2 hours into London a couple of times a week a week but am usually at my desk by 7:30am when I do. Having allowed my fitness to slip in last few years now I’m recovering from some surgery so I use my TacX Neo trainer 3-4 times per week as I try to get fitter plus usually spend all weekend gardening or some other exercise. At some stage I will be back cycling on the road. [Post edited 28 Jul 11:37]

Most of my working week is at home which makes it worse as all of my meetings are on a screen as well. On the rare occasions I'm in the office its better in that respect as if I've got 3 or 4 hours of face to face meetings it means less screen time.

Keep pondering on getting a standing desk so at least I can spend some of the day not sat, something like https://flexispot.co.uk/adjustable-standing-desk-pro-series.html [Post edited 28 Jul 11:13]

Work takes the majority of that but I also run some side hustles. I have noticed that I can do some of that on the phone these days, so not actually at desk but still screen time

I too spend far too long in front of my monitors. When I moved house I got a standing desk from Amazon and its great. Although I have lapsed back into sitting a lot.

That was me. I only used to go in one day a week and then occasionally as needed. Most of my time I was at home constantly on screens for the whole day, often multi-tasking with a Zoom meeting running on one screen while trying to finish stuff off (or on TWTd when quiet!) on another one. I didn’t touch TV either, but then we don’t really have evenings as the kids have stuff on 6 nights a week. You have to get out and keep active as much as you can when it’s like that or you’d go nuts.

I actually never quantified it. It varied over the years, but the type of work I got into meant much of it was computer based from 1999. In later years, it was a mix between computer (I had a three screen set up both at work and at home) and face to face meetings, telephone, video confs, then early versions of teams. I always preferred face to face or dial ins. My day in the office was therefore broken up, but not if I wfh. I didn’t bother with lunch hours - 20 mins between things was usual, but I’d grab the odd tea and sometimes meet colleagues over a cuppa in another part of the building. I tended to be an early person but hours varied depending on what we were doing. There was no overtime and beyond a certain grade you were not allowed flexitime. But for sanity I always logged the hours I actually worked to ensure I didn’t over work. I did long hours, 7 days a week a few times through necessity, but that was not good for me. I was lucky to get into work that I broadly enjoyed. It was varied. I got to meet a lot of people, sit on committee and stuff, mentored and generally did things around core work which meant longer hours but that was ok. I could if very interested in the subject matter sit for hours at a time in front of the computer without a break. Daft really, but I did vary it. Overall, hours in front of computer screen? Maybe five a day on average on work, more if I worked at home, especially as that meant no two to three hours a day commute. [Post edited 29 Jul 7:06]

How long do you spend sitting in front of a computer every day? on 08:25 - Jul 29 with 202 views | ThisIsMyUsername | I'm getting a lot of soreness in my neck and upper back recently. I am not using a proper desk chair, or a proper desk. My laptop is on a stand which brings it up to eye line. I am using a plug in keyboard and mouse. Would the use of a proper desk chair and desk make a big difference?

It's incredible to think any work ever got done before computers! My first real job I had a PC on the desk, but it wasn't networked or connected to the internet (we had one dial-up connected machine to share across the office if we wanted to send an email). I'm not sure what I would have done with it - probably just used it as a word processor. When I did work experience at Suffolk County Council I'm pretty sure they still had a typing pool. I just missed that way of working, but it must have been a lot simpler. Just dictate a letter and get it sent down to the pool, proof read it and send it to the mailroom for posting. Then wait 2 weeks for a reply. Lol. Easy life.
