The rise of non league teams.... 08:28 - Jul 31 with 1571 viewsPippin1970

Loads of investment now like Kings Lynn and Real Bedford.Lots of huge financial backers as well in a lot of clubs. Pop stars getting on board with some too. 43 per cent increases in crowds around the country. Just trying to get hold of an Ipswich ticket is hard nowadays.

Real Bedford are definitely ones to watch. They're backed by Bitcoin investors, so will certainly have the funds to reach the National League or better in the near future.

Very local to me. Although the "crypto-bros" were met with quite a bit of skepticism they seem to be running the club at a semi-pro level already. There have been some discussions about a merger with Bedford Town over the summer that appear to have been done in a good way by both parties but couldn't get done in time to satisfy their league's requirements.

With the approval for the Universal Studios site just south of Bedford the area will be ripe for a decent level team if they don't get bored of it.

I think part of the reason for the popularity of non league is the ease of access to the football experience, especially as a family.

Bigger clubs all have waiting lists, membership fees and high ticket prices.

I can rock up to York, park near the stadium and take my kids to the match for under £40. We still have fun.

I see they call themselves 'The Pirates'. Not something I'd previously associated with the area.

Much like all US sporting franchises have become too expensive, so they look at opportunities abroad, even the Football League is now out of reach for entry-level investors. The Wrexham Effect has shown what a relatively modest amount of funds (and some clever media/marketing) can achieve - cautionary tales like Rushden & Diamonds long forgotten.

Doubly so whan you have crypto kiddies with possibly very temporary wealth and schemes/funds to advertise (not to mention their riches are new enough the may well have a love of football and retain local connections with smaller teams).

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

It's all go around there isn't it.
By pass joining Cambridge to Bedford to MK going on.
Just heard a load of houses are going to be built next to the Black Cat roundabout. Can't remember the name of the village.
Universal is going to be huge in every sense.
Last I heard the 2 Bedford clubs were at each others throats so I would be surprised if the merge happened very easily.

Yes - not to mention E-W rail when it gets finished. Think the housing development you are talking about is at Tempsford - initial proposal for 7k houses but some talk of new Milton Keynes sized development. Very well placed for transport links there with A1/M1/East Coast Mainline and E-W rail.

Universal will be brilliant for the area for jobs - not just on site but the whole of the local area.

12 months ago the two Bedford teams were publicly at each other's throats but there's been a joined up approach to discussions about the merger - possibly down to financial issues at Bedford Town.

As Sheffordblue mentions the village you're thinking of is Tempsford, which is famous only for having one of the biggest swingers venues in the country, The Vanilla Alternative.

The two Bedford clubs have kissed and made up but regardless of how much money they throw at the club the issue will be the location of the ground, it's in the middle of nowhere, it's only neighbours are a council run gypsy site and a sewage plant. The only way to get there is to drive and there is barely any parking.

Tempsford also famous for the Battle of Tempsford 917 when Jarls Toglos and Manna were killed. RAF Tempsford was also where a lot of the SOE flights left from during WWII including Violette Szabo who had the film "Carve Her Name with Pride" made about her exploits.

The SOE memorial worth a visit and is just a bit further south from the swingers club which is definitely the only thing that Tempsford is currently famous for!

It used to be a decent pub, The Anchor, with a massive beer garden stretching down to the river.

And indeed King Guthrum was killed! No idea if he has any descendants in these parts...

I go a d watch Dorking Wanderers a fair few times each season. It's a grand day out. I catch up with school mates and you can drink a d watch the football. Plus it's only 18 quid to get in.
