A thought occurs (and sorry if it's been discussed elsewhere) - was it an outright 'no, I'm not joining you', or more a result of any sort of deadline that may have been set by the club?
If his agent is telling him to hold out for a PL transfer that may never come, as well as Middlesbrough wanting him gone now as well, I assume there's a chance of a volte face by the end of the month.
As long as we can get other CM business (Cajuste, for instance) sorted in the interim, I'd have no issue with the club playing the long game here. |  |

I still think there is a deal to be done as Boro clearly want him to go. It's clear that as it stands no-one else has come in for him. I'm sure we can potentially do other business and revisit it. |  | | |

He should still be here now. Don't begrudge him the move at all but it's looking like a very poor decision letting him go without adequate cover being in place beforehand. No reason that couldn't have been completed once we had everything sorted. |  |

Hopefully for a lower transfer fee and lower wages if it comes to that, as if no PL clubs come in for him then we are not competing with them financially, and perhaps it indicates he is not worth such huge money. |  | | |
