Cricket Day 5 then 11:10 - Aug 4 with 1314 viewsSteve_M

10 runs and a wicket in the first two overs. 25 needed - or 3 wickets.

And that's that.

Great drama but absolutely shambolic collapse.

Collapses have been the name of the game this series for both sides.

Was going to say disappointing for England supporters, but actually I can’t feel disappointed after such a great, competitive, finely balanced series, it’s been hugely enjoyable.

Well done to both teams, and it’s lovely to see the India fans so happy.

Let’s be fair, India didn’t deserve to lose the series. For large parts, they’ve been the better team across the 5 test matches.

And yet they only managed a draw, and only managed that because Chris Woakes dislocated his shoulder and England forgot how to catch.

It would’ve been really harsh if England had won this series, for me India deserved to take something away from this series. 2-2 feels about right.

Without being too critical as it’s our style these days to go overly aggressive/borderline reckless.. Harry Brook getting out in that manner when needing 80 odd to win with 7 wickets in hand is the moment the test match went from being done and dusted to squeaky bum time. The whole energy of both teams switched.

And if Brook had come out and played forward defensives all day we wouldnt have got near it

Once the Indians snared Root last night, they believed they could do it. Their bowling was causing all sorts of problems, it just seemed like every ball there was question being asked if the batsman. Siraj will get the plaudits but the other Indian seamers also played their part.

Absolutely.

But we did get near it. Largely thanks to brook. So when we needed 84 runs and had 7 wickets left, it was ours to lose. And that would at that moment be more likely down to us making a bad rash shot than a moment of brilliance from a tired Indian bowling unit against two set batters.

And Brooke did just that by running down the wicket and playing a hack. There’s no excuse. It’s poor game management in that moment

would have bitten your hand off for a draw at the start of the series tbh, thought we'd lose fairly comfortably and still think we'll get white washed in Australia. Bowling? I think this series had merely told us who isn't good enough and really our best two remaining seamers are atkinson and stokes. Archer/Wood you may as well treat as one bowler for the winter in the hope that one can play at any given time. Tongue hoovered up the tail a few times but i think would get clattered in australia, however such is the dearth of talent he'll probably have to go.

That's not the point though it is. The point is Root and Brook had taken the game from being an almost certain India win to them having their heads down, bowlers knackered, fielding mistakes creeping in. The issue I have with Bazball is that you will see a player hit two fours in an over and then get out doing something daft as they think they have to hit a third or fourth boundary. You can cut loose like Brook and Root did, but still use your brain now and then. Brook getting himself out - and that is what he did - let them back in.

Might be a fair result, a drawn series, but we had India 0-2 in their second innings at Old Trafford but didn't have the bowlers to finish the job on a flat pitch, and to have been so close to the target at the Oval with only five down and then have to send a man with one arm in a sling is pretty pathetic.

Bazball is a choice between entertainment and winning the big series. Australia will be licking their lips looking at today.

Agreed. Root & Brrok had taken England to 301-4 with only another 70 odd needed so Brook should have toned it down & England would have got home comfortably. When he was out, the out of form Bethell couldn't find a single to get Root on strike so the chase ground to a halt, Root got out & Bethell threw away his wicket in frustration.

I would argue that this style of cricket is what gives us the chance to win big series, personally. I can't imagine even our best sides under Vaughan getting close to chasing 374 to win on a wicket like that with only 10 men able to bat, and they had better players available to call on, imo. Brook's approach got us close to victory, it's not his fault we didn't get there. Bethell looked lost and Smith looked terrified, it shouldn't have been asking too much for one of them to hit 20 runs and see us home with the tail. Root's dismissal was worse than Brook's too, imo. At least Brook got out playing the way that got him to a big score, Root wafted at one meekly. You can get out playing bad shots to decent balls whether you're being aggressive or not.
