How does your garden grow? 09:38 - Aug 8 with 292 viewsNthQldITFC

Having a very disappointing garden produce season this year, partly to do with my lack of attention due to other things.

Tomatoes - 3/10 - some stunted plants with fewer fruit set
Cucumbers - 1/10 - plants indoors and out die off after producing a few fruit - I've had this for a couple of years despite changing soil, everyone else I know has had similar cucumber problems this year
Beans - 1/10 - started them too late but even so they've done buggar all
Beetroot - 8/10 - solid as ever
Salads - 7/10 - doing best where largely unattended which says a lot about my skills probably
Herbs - 8/10 reliable as ever, coriander astounding.

….chilli crop this year but it’s taken a lot of attention to get them where they are now.

My herbs were really disappointing though, withered and feeble.

I did pull my spuds last week, they were pretty good although a few were a bit “scorched”.

Broad beans were excellent a few weeks back. Runners coming on now, but not in huge quantities. Pears, plums, apples, gages and grapes all very good.

Tomatoes both in greenhouse and outside have grown & fruited well, but fruit's just not ripening, still green.

Cucs outside gh have for first time ever done better than those inside.

Plugs sold to me as Bell Peppers have done v. well in gh, big & prolific - but turned out to be chillis! which I can't eat (gut). Neighbour loves em tho.

Sprouts, & even nasturtium companions, have been completely stripped of all foliage (by cabbage white butterflies I assume, which have been mega-prolific this year). Only the skeleton stalks remain!

Runners are cropping poorly so far, & the cane frame has been pushed by storm wotsit into looking like the Leaning Tower of Ripon.

Peas have done exceptionally well, great crop from only a few plants.

Courgettes went from titchies to giants in about 4 days when we had heavy rain about 3 weeks ago, and are now marrows which are too heavy to carry, need wheelbarrowing to kitchen!

Lettuces & Celtuces - reasonably good.

Spinach - reasonably good, but much munched by slugs

Leeks - grown exceptionally well this year

Spring Onions - reasonably good

Asparagus - late but average

Globe Artichokes - poor this year, only half the usual number of fruit

Jerusalem Artichokes - vigorous as ever, harvesting is at least a month away.

Spuds still flowering, harvesting in maybe 2 weeks

Herbs slow growing except for curry plant!

Strawberries - incredibly disappointing, had about 10 strawbs from 10 (new) plants.

Figs - poorest year ever. Only about 3 on the outdoor tree, plenty in the gh tub one but they’re all titchy.

Hazelnuts & wild cherries - bumper crops, never seen anything like it, some branches so laden they were almost on the ground - but all blew off prematurely in last week's storm

Everything late this year owing to my delaying sowing & planting due to drought in spring.

Isn't it more traditional to pull your leeks? 🤔

Disappointing for me as well.
Onions, garlic & spuds all smaller than usual
Beetroot seedlings eaten by birds (never happened before)
Gooseberries eaten by deer or birds, again never happened before
Entire sweetcorn crop eaten by badgers
Only squash/pumpkins doing well this year

Cherry Tomatoes are turning red now and getting quite a good crop.

Courgettes have been hit and miss, not as good as last year.

Herbs still going strong.

Rhubarb has been disappointing. Little spindly stalks, fed and watered it well, crown not that old. I dunno.

Grapes, never had so many as this year. I have to pick all the fallen up quickly before the birds get them and do purple poos on the car.
