What a waste of our taxes on 06:53 - Aug 10 with 1754 views | Swansea_Blue | Are you sure about that? Some people (like Monbiot) were warning back in 2000 that the Act could be used in exactly this way to shut down peaceful protest. They’ve been proven right. Irrespective of that point, yes agreed - it’s a huge waste of money.

People who aren’t protesting for a proscribed terrorist organisation are getting arrested too. That should worry everyone irrespective of tribal loyalties.

Quite apart from that around the corner was a Palistine demo that as far as I am aware went off peacefully, these idiots knew full well they were going to get arrested! Apart from the possibility that being arrested under the terrorism act could incur a stay at HM pleasure all those people will now have on their CV arrested under the terrorism act how is that going to go down when these young ones try and get a job etc? Whether you agree with it or not these people knowingly broke one of the most serious laws you can be charged with!

Terrorist sympathisers aren’t the brightest colour in the rainbow. They are an interesting breed and probably proud of having such things on their criminal records.

Of course. "There are just laws and there are unjust laws. I would be the first to advocate obeying just laws. One has not only a legal but a moral responsibility to obey just laws. Conversely, one has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws." Edit: Furthermore, "an individual who breaks a law that conscience tells him is unjust, and willingly accepts the penalty by staying in jail to arouse the conscience of the community over its injustice, is in reality expressing the very highest respect for the law." And that surely is the point of these most recent protests, wouldn't you say? Far from "stupidly" protesting in a manner that will get them arrested, the protestors in question knowingly break this law to highlight that, certainly in its current form and with regard to its application in this case, "the law is a ass". Those idiots knew what they were doing, fine, make anti-genocide blah blah blah banners and join the rest of the pointless protests about an issue in another continent. But saying they support terrorism is not the wisest thing to do. [Post edited 10 Aug 9:01]

Yes, I’m sure they were fully aware they COULD be arrested - as anyone else does when knowingly breaking a law. But this protest could have been handled differently - laws are not always fully enforced in every circumstance, if they were we would all have a criminal record! No, a decision was made to arrest nearly 500 people, with all the costs falling to the taxpayer. The resulting publicity is probably a 100 fold what it would been if the protest just been monitored and those of ‘interest’ to the security services perhaps arrested later. If the terrorist group were after some publicity then the authorities gave them just what they wanted. Therefore what the law is trying to prevent has just done the opposite… [Post edited 10 Aug 9:09]

Not really, there is videos going about from auditors who were there and you can plainly here a policeman telling a protester about to write his support on a placard for PA not to do it as he will be arrested! So what does that tell you,he supports PA?

Yes really. Palestine Action is not a terrorist organisation by any reasonable definition. "Auditors". Good grief.

What a waste of our taxes on 09:30 - Aug 10 with 1219 views | DJR | A disturbing aspect of the arrests for me is that the founders of Palestine Action have been given permission to challenge the ban. https://www.standard.co.uk/news/uk/palestine-action-terror-ban-high-court-judge- The case, likely to last three days, will look at whether the terror ban “amounts to a disproportionate interference with the rights to freedom of expression and freedom to protest”, as well as a claim that proscription was imposed without proper consultation with Palestine Action. But, disturbingly, the hearing won't take place until November, and in the meantime hundreds are being arrested who would have their convictions overturned if the appeal proves successful. What this, and the arrests does prove, is that an organisation like Palestine Action shouldn't have been shoe-horned into the Terrorism Act. Instead, if measures were thought necessary, bespoke legislation should have been produced which targeted those involved in the organisation and its actions but not those merely writing messages of support on a piece of cardboard. And this was reported in the Observer. A Police Federation source told The Observer: “Making Palestine Action a proscribed organisation may prove to be impractical in policing terms. It’s just another burden on officers.” [Post edited 10 Aug 9:39]

proscribing them is stupid. the government should have been able to foresee this stand off. they have just created a situation in which the police and the law are made to look stupid. none of that alters the fact that the group need to be taken down with the full force of other laws. they should be dealt with as a criminal conspiracy and those involved in the attack on the raf base should be looking at the maximum sentences available.

They're not, and it doesn't justify it, but they must have known they would be hit very hard for entering a military base.

Thats an equivocation. The issue of absolutely deserved punishment for criminal damage on a military base is separate to people holding cards up ni exercise of free speech.

Didn't say it wasn't. Just said the group's actions opened them up to an extreme response and in an age where laws are abused it wasn't very smart.

I’d argue that civil disobedience in an age where laws are abused is essential if we wish to continue to live in a free society.
