Is Akpom a starter? I don't think we bring him in, with his pedigree, to keep the bench warm.
I assume Clarke will move to the right - as he did in pre season - when Philogene is fit.
Which means just two (Hirst and Davis) remain the XI from the double promotion seasons.

It's likely that's our regular starting eleven, although I suspect we will see Akpom across the front four roles regularly and Szomidcs I'd imagine is still the main 10.
If Hutchinson stays we're in a ridiculous place, and even if he leaves it's £40m to reinvest/have our usual January window. |  |

I hope we play Clarke on the right with Akpom/Szmodics in the 10. Akpom moves up top should Hirst get injured or needs a rest. |  |

That looks about right to me (I agree with what others say about Smodders and Akpom). I think Johnson will start some games, and Young others. Young is a miracle of sports science, and he may well be as fit as anyone on a day to day basis, but 40+ starts surely ain't gonna happen. Johnson's positive display against Bromley was a welcome tonic in that respect. The other 6 of the back 7 pick themselves (unless and until Hackney comes to Town...).
Do we know how long before Philogene is likely to be in contention for a start? If he's not ready for Southampton then we may have the same wide two as started the Bromley game. Can't see Cough Drops gracing us with his presence.
When Philogene is fit, it would be really interesting to see Clarke on the right in competitive games. He was too bad to be true against Bromley, and I'm clinging on to the possibility that playing on the right (as I understand he did for Sunderland) might, possibly, be the key to him...? |  | | |

I can't see him leaving. He's a proper little Lieutenant. If we get promoted, we may have to get out the hanky, but for this season he surely stays.
He's been heavily involved with the Community Trust, he's clearly trusted by Kieran to be in the mini leadership group, and he gives 100%. He's an all round good egg. I think Kieran must know that keeping /some/ of that double promotion winning squad is important for morale and the identity of the club and its fans.
Also, at age 28 I can't see him commanding too much of a fee. I mean, sure, if he were Welsh, Wrexham would be readying their £20m bid, but given that he's not, I can't see him raising more than a couple of friendlies against Lazio. With the best will in the world. | | | |

Clarke played predominantly on the Left Wing for Sunderland (or atleast that’s how I recall it)
Interestingly Phil O’Gene played predominantly on the right hand side for Hull. That said I think he played of left for England U21s and has stated previously that’s his preferred role.

I see Hirst and Akpom as our ideal 9 and 10, Szmodics can play left but think.a fit Philogene starts there. McKenna was playing Clarke right in preseason and that's where our player stays out wide. Azon is for the future and incredible cover. I appreciate we now are inundated on the left hence Broadys departure, it feels hugely complicated! [Post edited 14 Aug 19:37]

I personally like to see a consistent as possible XI, with understudy’s to rotate and replace when needed, it was a the bedrock of our success previously, and the consistency and cohesion really did show.
