Sunderland 16:52 - Aug 16 with 2389 views | muccletonjoe | 8 making debuts and put 3 past west ham, have certainly made a better start than I thought they would. Hammers beat us easily at home in our last game in PL
Sunderland on 22:34 - Aug 16 with 457 views | GlasgowBlue | Just watching the Sunderland game on MOTD right now and a striking difference I’ve noticed between them and us. When Sunderland pick the ball up in midfield they are looking to drive forward and attack. When we picked up the ball in midfield last season we either went square or backwards, looked reluctant to commit and were far more passive in possession.

Sunderland on 17:05 - Aug 16 by Bellevue_Blue | It's just not even a comparison and it's pointless. This is a team that spent 3 years in the Champ and sold 25M quid worth of players in the those last two years as well as 40M + this summer. They had time to evolve the squad and the club in a different way. Can't jump to conclusions now. They've not stayed up, they've won one game. [Post edited 16 Aug 17:06]

Yeah didn't they sell this guy called Jack Clarke for a load of money that likely helped

I think yiu are kidding yourself. We played West Ham just after our 2-2 draw with Aston Villa where we played exceptionally well. Confidence was high going into the West Ham game and they were in abysmal form with the manager predicted to get the sack if we beat the. They beat us convincingly 4-1. We were awful,

Indeed, a very bad day out. Ben Johnson was dreadful, Muric was Muric, and the gleeful Hammers fan next to me told me that that was Kalvin Phillips' best performance for them, which made me smile. As an aside, London Stadium perhaps the most soulless stadium I've been to.

The scenario of being on a high as you're about to play your first game in the top flight for 20 years - and at home - with all the hopes and dreams of the fans and players still intact, is a totally different scenario to playing West Ham away in October. So yes, I agree with people saying it could've been a lot different if we'd had a West Ham/Palace/Everton at home on the opening day rather than the Champions.

And following up their first game with a fellow promoted side instead of Man City away, also helps.

We had a full season before we played West Ham.., another transfer window, lots of coaching, and I’d suggest that helps too. They just have a better strategy than ours…, nothing wrong with our plan, young manager, young players from England, it’s logical even if it doesn’t work. BUT when you allow your manager to talk to any club he likes, at any point he likes, and have ZERO player retention for young talent, it’s less of a strategy, and more of a chaotic crossing of fingers. Our senior management are like Les Dawson playing a piano…, they know all the right notes, just not necessarily in the right order. It’s not a palm, it’s not coherent, because we couldn’t 1% implement it! And other clubs clarify when they sign players…, you stay a minimum two years or until the club decide, or we don’t sign you. To see clubs achieve more in one game, than we did in an entire season where we spent so much, and had so much time together, says everything. It’s so (relatively) poor on our part. Seriously. Why bury your head in the sand? We all want to be succesful? But how does celebrating failure strategically, and supporting repeating the same mistakes help? We don’t want toxicity - and we’ve generally had success too, but the levels of blind delusion are terrifying. It’s cult like at this point for a small rump…., you can’t defend our record last season, and yes, others have achieved more in one game, and we were THAT bad. It’s was our worse season in our entire history, that should matter, it shouldn’t be trivial or unimportant. It matters IF you want success. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

we were awful against west ham that day, but 2 things in mitigation:- that was an away game plus i was comparing it to how we played against liverpool, where we had the momentum from 2 promotions and played excellently against the best team in the league
