I was pleased for Sunderland on Saturday… 21:49 - Aug 18 with 1457 views | SitfcB | …but now I’m just annoyed at them and Leeds. How jarring is it we had one home win all season (first overall win wasn’t until November) yet they both with their first games, at home. Pathetic from us. But the fixture list was also pathetic. Blub.

We looked like a Prem side in our first game, unfortunately we played Liverpool. [Post edited 18 Aug 21:56]

I was pleased for Sunderland on Saturday… on 21:57 - Aug 18 with 1247 views | TractorJack | I know it got boring saying it but we were genuinely 'competitive' in the majority of games. The biggest difference I can see from these 2 games is that they've kept the opposition under 1 xg. I don't think we ever did that. Very difficult to win games when you give up as many chances as we did.
I was pleased for Sunderland on Saturday… on 21:58 - Aug 18 with 1185 views | Joey_Joe_Joe_Junior | We can complain about the fixtures all we like but we also never capitalized on very winnable games, Fulham, Villa, Man United should have all been wins before Spurs. Then we had a mental keeper than messed up games like Bournemouth at home before Christmas as well. We also didn't recruit a PL ready midfield by any stretch.

I was pleased for Sunderland on Saturday… on 22:00 - Aug 18 with 1128 views | Trequartista | Can't look backwards. If we go up, we need the breakup of the Big 17, so any win from Sunderland, Leeds or Burnley should be welcomed.

I was pleased for Sunderland on Saturday… on 22:01 - Aug 18 with 1099 views | bournemouthblue | A bit more jarred they got two of the easier sides first up, whilst we got Liverpool and Man City back to back Leeds have gone up with a stronger squad ultimately and Sunderland have recruited very well I suspect Sunderland's style probably is more conducive to the PL also given they like to absorb pressure and break

Home crowds will help them both, PR is not simply not an intimidating enough place to play, can make a big difference.

That initial unknown and spark will wear off. That's why playing west ham and Everton over Liverpool and Man city was a clincher. Fair play to them both, and I think they've learnt from us and others that you need to be strong and physical, you can't outplay the prem teams ever really, but you might be able to put battle them, and they've both proved that in the opening games.

I don't think it can be understated quite how much those two opening fixtures might have dampened our season. Muric's confidence was nuked at Man city, and for a team that had thrived on mental togetherness an early win may well have made us a hell of a lot harder to beat.

A win early certainly brings that good feeling and momentum We never quite built that, that 4 game phase of not losing was where we desperately needed that win The key to staying up is getting the majority of your points in that first half of the season

This is being overplayed by people to make themselves feel better about the reality of last season and our squad. Sure it was a tough start but Muric was making errors against everyone and didn't even look that happy in pre season. I don't think it was simply the level of opposition that led to that. We played plenty of mid and lower half teams in the first few months, we just simply weren't good or strong enough. In fact if we didn't sign Delap we might have been having a few very unwanted records tbh.

I was pleased for Sunderland on Saturday… on 22:15 - Aug 18 with 845 views | Smoresy | We weren't beaten by two games at the start of the season, let's be real on that lol. Our momentum balloon wasn't burst until a fair bit later than that. Leeds played some superb stuff last year and the year before, blew a lot of Championship sides away including us. And they've built on that by buying a bunch of massive blokes, majority from the big leagues on the continent. We know the opposite direction Sunderland have taken, in markets if not spending. I really try not to wallow in the past, but do see the benefit in constructive evaluation. Sure the club does too. It's positive if those two are able to break the establishment and provide something of a blueprint for strivers like us. Of course it's much too early to know how they'll fare over 38 games, but it's in our interest for someone at least to take out a "17" member. Bit of a shame if one of those to do it is a big stadium, big tradition club that wouldn't look out of place in the 17 for seasons to come, but better one of them than nobody.

Yes, 100%, it's so blatantly obvious and it would be good people to accept it rather than thinking half of the PL lower half teams have suddenly massively weakened over the summer lol. The club clearly know it as well and will do it completely differently next time. That's why this year is SO big, it's evident that the recruitment last summer never gave us a chance but we just need to hope the bulk of it it was at least good enough to get us back there (and hopefully develop a few as well). If we make it back it will be another big off season though in multiple areas of the pitch. That's getting way ahead of ourselves though, a big few weeks to try and sort this year first. "PR is not simply not an intimidating enough place to play, can make a big difference" - disagree - Newcastle have a noisy intimidating crowd but apart from the tin-pot cup they've won f-ck all since the 50's

I can't be bothered to trawl through the Newcastle attendances of the 20th Century but not really sure what that random fact has got to do with Leeds and Sunderland being a tougher place to go this season that PR was last.

We got 1 point against those teams last yeah and West Ham scored 8 goals past us. Yeah we had hard games but they all were too much for us last year.

Defensively we weren't great in that Championship season so building a new defensive pairing in the PL was always going to be challenging sadly Hopefully if we do get back up quickly, we will go up more PL ready so to speak It probably did happen all a bit too fast last time, we enjoyed the ride but always knew it would be difficult
