The trouble with the US system is that there isn't an official leader of the opposition. Not one person who can call out Trump with authority. Too many local voices and groups.

to that end it's always astounded me that anyone loses after a single term, because you have the 5 year recognition for the incumbent, while til relatively late in the process you have the opposition party quasi fighting amongst themselves to choose their own leader; ok there are unpopular single termers (Carter, Trump) and/or those who lost due to exhaustion with the party (Bush Senior after two terms of Reagan)

Although still more popular than Trump which is the current yardstick to measure against. He has a net positive approval rating (+6%) and Trump is net negative (-28%) in California. Also leads among polling for the Democratic primaries, albeit with no one having actually declared yet, so very up in the air. https://emersoncollegepolling.com/california-2026-poll/

But there can be a potential Presidential candidate who articulates solutions that address issues that, whilst within their own purview, resonate across the nation. Which, assuming the normal process for an orderly and peaceful transfer of power, also applies to potential Republican Presidential candidates, but, they will be in Trump's shadow until the primaries.

I thought Newsome’s ratings had improved significantly lately, especially after Trump sent in the national guard. He comes across as a slimy operator though.

California upset with him over failure to manage fast speed rail project from Sacramento for 8 billion budget. Work started 2015 and its massively behind schedule and actual spend is already 14.4 billion. Add the handling of the fires crisis and he is not well liked even by Democrats.
