Don't understand the negativity…. 14:09 - Aug 22 with 1395 viewsmegnuts

David Button

Veteran goalkeeper with over 370 senior appearances across the divisions, the majority in the Championship. Provides experienced depth as third-choice, allowing Slicker to head out on loan for valuable game time.

Azor Matusiwa

Ajax academy graduate who established himself in the Eredivisie before impressing with Reims and Rennes in France. Recently linked with Liverpool, he arrives as the long-term successor to Morsy in midfield.

Cédric Kipré

Voted both Players’ Player of the Season and Supporters’ Player of the Season at West Brom in 2023/24. Brings outstanding Championship experience and is the natural replacement for Burgess at centre-back.

Ashley Young

Signed to replace Tuanzebe. A decorated career speaks for itself, with vast Premier League and international pedigree. Offers leadership, professionalism, and experience to support a younger squad following summer departures.

Jens Cajuste

A statement signing at this level. Thrived last season and was a standout, knows and loves the club, has the ability to dictate games from midfield. Fitness is the key, but once available, he more than fills the void left by Luongo.

Chuba Akpom

Proven goalscorer with 34 goals in 82 appearances for Middlesbrough, finishing as the Championship’s top scorer in 2022/23. Featured in the Champions League last season and brings versatility, likely stepping into Broadhead’s role but can cover Hirst.

Kasey McAteer

Energetic and versatile, capable of playing across the line behind the striker. Republic of Ireland international with a strong work rate, Championship pedigree, and Premier League experience last season. Knows a lot of the players here so can settle quickly. Provides cover during Wes’ injury absence.

We’re still a striker short and a central midfield player, no question, and ideally need a more like-for-like replacement for Omari, who only departed last week. But is it really all doom and gloom, and is the current negativity justified? I’d argue not, in fact, where players have come in, we’ve more than upgraded on those who have gone out.

A lot of those are squad players, it’s underwhelming so far for a parachute club that’s had to sell its stars but there’s time left.

Plenty of decent business in there though and I think Matuiswa is going to be an amazing signing for us.

We bought our top level Championship players last year. Szmodics, Clarke, Philogene, Johnson and Townsend (PL players really), O’Shea, Greaves, Palmer. We’re trying to upgrade (HH, Egeli, etc) but it must be really hard to improve on those now we’re back in the Championship.

Poll: Do you think Pert is key to all of this?

Which was the main problem last year!

Obviously with the funds we have you’d hope to be upgrading still rather than going to Leicester bench for the big summer deals. As everyone has said we are not shopping in the same place as Birmingham etc, who have done very ambitious business and pulled it off.

Hopefully a few decent European signings to come.

Akpom - he scored 28 of those goals in 1 season for boro.

Im not saying he's not a good signing, but he's had a steady career i genuinely can't sit here and say he's a good signing, tbh im not sure anyone knows where he's going to play yet but hope he will be good for us.

I don't have any issue with the players bought in - I think it's good sensible business across the board, only exception for me is Button, feels a wasted slot but can understand KMc decision there.

My issue is probably with the time taken to get deals done, has been a drag at times, and felt we were under prepared for the season opening, and I think KMc would have felt the same, but think as the window shuts we are heading for a good group of players for the season ahead.

It what way is underwhelming? Who would you have bought in differently?

Of course we've had to sell stars, that's the reality of being relegated, we have to recoup money, and we can't spend like a PL club currently, because we aren't one, and we have to run the club for where we are right now financially.

We've still spent £20m, plus some good loans acquisitions (with obligations/options).

A couple of wins and all will be well.

Of course, if we don't win either of the next two games then expect a torrential downpour of piddling doom!

Must admit though I'm very surprised we've used a squad place for a 37 year old keeper.

Yep, our 3rd keeper being Slicker meant we had an extra squad place. Given how easy it seems to be to apply for an emergency loan for a keeper it does seem a total waste of a squad place.

Wonder if we will even register him?

Depends on what we are building though.

We are having to not just strengthen the team but build it back up after key players over the few seasons have left.

To that end, the fact they are squad players isn't an issue. Also, we rotate players - so being a squad player at Ipswich is likely somewhat different to elsewhere. In that you get a lot more game time/ starting time etc.

It's just a perspective and opinion, I couldn't say who I would have brought in different because I am just an armchair fan from afar. I could give you a bunch of names but they might be all completely unrealistic. The general consensus is the window hasn't been amazing as of now and I don't think this morning particularly changes that.

Of course I know we had to sell our stars, I am the one that told most of this board last April about Omari and got a load of pushback on it. It's just underwhelming in current state to me, as we do not seem to be landing the number 1 targets from a position of strength. We know we have had the links and had players in the building that have turned us down (as of now).

If we end up going with Ogbene and McAteer on the right losing Omari that doesn't seem all that great but time will tell hoping business still to be done.

McAteer seems to me a deal that could have been done anytime this summer, so might suggest we are moving down the list but again, I could be wrong. I am fine with the player just hope there is more to come still up the pitch, including maybe someone with a super high ceiling from Europe.

End of the day we will still have a ridiculously strong squad this year and promotion will still be the expectation, I just thought we might be able to almost rubber stamp it with what we had at our disposal this summer. Feels like we are in a unique position for the club as a parachute team and not one in financial difficulty like Leicester or with their third new manager in a year like Southampton.

I am still not full sure our fans understand the true football economics and gap of teams that are coming down now.

Anyway all will be judged in 10 days time but even then, of course, assessments will be guesswork.

I'm still gutted over losing Hutchinson.

That aside no big complaint about who we've got on the books and think McKenna should have most of the tools needed to at least threaten the top two.

More important than new bodies now is getting a team playing his way as a unit after so much turnover. This should come just hope it's quick.

Think it was inevitable though, probably not in the way he went but was never going to stay.

I think by the end of next week if Egeli, Caceres and HH/Billing or Ruiz are in the building there will be a very different feel to how this window went.

Yes exactly, if those come off all will be well.

Slicker would have taken up a squad space, too. Need to have been born on or after 1st Jan 2004 to qualify. Slicker is 15/09/2002.
