So what to do? Building connections suggests more of the same, but bench players seem to be offering more to the side. I can think of five changes immediately to switch up the team and offer something different, ignoring my penchant for a back three. Would it work? Or will it just cause more issues in terms of connections?

Palmer
Young - O'Shea - Kipre - Davis
Matusiwa - Cajuste
Ogbene - Chaplin - Szmodics
Akpom

Subs: Walton, Johnson, Greaves, Humphreys, Taylor, Clarke, Philogene, McAteer, Hirst

Amazing how in the minds of so many fans players not in the team are so much better than those who are in the team - until they are in the team of course.

Young, Cajuste and Chaplin is basically by proof. They (Chaplin aside yesterday) have generally offered more to the team when playing than the alternatives have. I'd say similar for Ogbene, as he's more a clone of Burns, though understand that's more debatable. I'm maybe hanging on to his performance at Brentford.

The only question marks are Kipre - but surely he can't be as accident prone as Greaves - and Akpom, who has pedigree. Albeit so do Clarke and Philogene.

I think McAteer is a shoe in to the start. This isn’t the team I would necessarily go with but I think it’s the team McKenna will pick.

Azor Jens
McAteer Szmodics Jaden

McAteer should be good to go after a week on the grass with the group, no fitness issues, had a full pre season with Leicester.

It looks the most natural and balanced side for me, probably for the foreseeable. With understudy’s of:
Akpom, Ogbene, Philogene, Taylor.

I make this (which is what Big Jase put) correct.

However, I wouldn't be surprised if McKenna stuck with any one (or even all 3) of those.

Cajuste has to start. McAteer, I assume will start. Dropping Greaves unless tactical v the opposition seems a bit OTT.

We paid a ridiculous fee for Philogene and were after him for multiple windows so let’s just get the system with him and Davis whatever the plan maybe, working. He’s not going to improve on the bench. Clarke has to be dropped.

I’m hoping for a new CMf in that sub pack too

He has the ability to break open a team

He’s possibly our best player technically

Plus building his connection to Davis is essential.

I’d go

Palme
Young OShea Greaves Davis
Azor Cajuste
McAteer Szmodics Philogene
Hirst

NO J CLARKE

Play Szmodics, Chaplin and McAteer behind Hirst, should be the best combination

Akpom is not going to start as the striker. He didn't even replace Hirst when he did come on yesterday. I say he came on because I am sure he did but I don't recall him touching the ball!

Given it's the last week of the transfer window it's impossible to pick next weekend's team. We have no idea who's coming in and who's going out.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Young over Johnson for sure. Johnson dithers, constantly out of position and stops the flow on the right side.

True, I just went with the players who are already here. McKenna very rarely starts a new signings straight away, and I cannot see us selling anyone named in the OP in this window.

I hope so.

McAteer must obviously be given a proper chance, however disappointing his miss was against Preston. Given McKenna's downbeat noises on Ogbene, and given the form of JClarke (which is really quite something to behold), I think McAteer must come in on the right, and Jaden on the left. Players surely have to know that when they have been bobbins for a fair few games, and we've just paid over £10m for another player in a similar position, they may very well be dropped.

JClarke is just the sort of player who, if he is on song (if he can even sing), can make an impact from the bench. If he fights his way back into the team with supersub performances, all to the good.

As for Jens, I very much hope he is considered up to starting. And equally I very much hope he is able to play 90 minutes for us this season from time to time.

I think Young has probably earned a start, but I have little problem with Johnson this season. He has looked positive and looked to shoot at a time when nobody else even dared. So I'm not fussed on that one.

Substitutions before the car park has emptied this time please. McKenna used to be so very good at using subs in this division and the one below.

McKenna doesn't really start a player who's signed within the last few days, so I think if we're talking starting elevens, the 'incoming' element of the equation is not terribly relevant.

Outgoings, maybe. It's conceivable that a bid comes in for someone other than Woolfy (who's clearly not starting anyway), but I don't think that stops us from having a go at picking the team subject to the relevant players still being with us. I would think it is very unlikely that anyone in our likely starting 11 will be off in the next week.

A huge bid for Leif might be tempting if Townsend were fit, but it's hard to see us letting him go in the current circumstances.

Regardless, we're still likely to see players come/go this week. I very much doubt everything will get done on the last day.
