Football on TV 05:11 - Aug 25 with 1753 views | Chrisd | Is it just me or is anyone else out there getting a little bored of the shear volume of live games on TV? 2/3 weeks into the new season and already it’s becoming dull and predictable. I come from a generation where the Big Match was a weekly event, I’d really get excited looking forward to a live game on ITV, now with games on all the time - I’m already bored, it’s a rarity that I genuinely look forward to watching a game. It just feels like overkill and for me it’s draining all the interest I have for football, especially with the majority of teams - from all levels - playing a similar style. Surely, less really can be more instead of forcing as many games down our throats as possible? I appreciate money talks in the modern game, but surely this is simply overkill now? On reflection, it’s probably me just getting older and I could simply choose another channel to watch! [Post edited 25 Aug 5:25]

Football on TV on 06:33 - Aug 25 with 1392 views | franz_tyson | I just watch Town. Lost interest in football in general and losing interest more and more . Games are getting decided upon sketchy penalty decisions and it's becoming stop/start with players feigning injury., etc. The new fans are more interested in thr legal side of the game like silhouettes and the stats (XG, etc) and the new invented tactics like low blocks ( we never had closing down in the past). We're being fed too much so that they can exploit as much they can ....and it feels like football's been stretched as far as it can. But we can still have the choice to watch as little or as much as we want.

Agree about the new fans interests - all the stats are total cr@p, all that counts is the amount of goals scored. (and cheese).

Football on TV on 07:55 - Aug 25 with 1156 views | ArnieM | OP: nope, you're right, there far too much live football on tv, and like you im bored as hell with it now tbh ( im watching games less and less). I font actually think thrres any genuine excitement in the " product" these days. Take the shirts off the players and you'd struggle yo see any difference in style of play / identity between the teams. Everyone seems to play the same way. Tippy happy passing back n forth, mostly back.Nothing like the sport was in the 1970/80's when it was genuinely a contact sport, and the players were proper nen, who'd just get up and carry on if belted (Usually from behind). Touch a player these days and fown they go clutching their head rolling around. Bunch of Jessie's.

Football on TV on 08:15 - Aug 25 with 1072 views | Mark | I agree, as with football on TV all the time, nothing is special any more. I sometimes have a match on in the background and just look up if there is a goal, after which there is the usual VAR review to decide whether it stands. That is not what football is supposed to be. I also get annoyed by all the advertising and teams not wearing their proper colours. At the weekend I saw several fans at a Premier League game filming the match through their mobile phones, to get footage for social media no doubt rather than enjoying the moment.
Football on TV on 08:36 - Aug 25 with 989 views | lurcher | To some extent I agree, but we aren't supposed to watch every game. I watch the Town and the odd game here and there featuring teams around us.

^^^^THIS^^^^ totally agree, and even then only on Town TV** Try explaining the excitement of FA Cup final day to anyone under 40 or the anticipation of the Home Internationals!! and the joy of not having to listen to Chris Knob Sutton, Dan the Dick Goodman and so many other 'experts' who frankly make the coverage worse to to point its unwatchable **although I miss Brenner, give him his due Glen does an ok commentary and Westie must me the best summariser there is

I’m totally the same. I sometimes wonder if I even like football now but love all things ITFC. I probably sound like a miserable old got but struggle with the ‘double pivot’, ‘false 9’ modern day speak as well.
Football on TV on 09:02 - Aug 25 with 889 views | MattinLondon | I’m in my early 40s and I love watching football but I’m not bothered about watching a lot of it - I’m aware that that doesn’t make much sense. I guess I pick-and-choose. International tournaments- love them but not too fussed about watching a lot of the qualifiers, especially the ones at Wembley, as I find the crowd there to be far too sterile. Sometimes I do find myself watching those highlights shows on ITV4 - Match of the 80s, but fortunately I’m a bit too ‘young’ to remember football from that era as it’s mostly appallingly bad. I know a lot on here are critical of modern football, but football back then is ten times worse. The ball constantly in the air and played by a lot of donkeys. I find the style back then to be far more samey to each other than today’s game.

Football on TV on 09:20 - Aug 25 with 835 views | Radlett_blue | I think the lack of an off season is a big factor. The summer invariably has an international tournament - the World Cup used to be shorter, with fewer teams & was once over 4 years & the Euros were only 4 teams & then 8. Qualifiers & pointless international friendly games now take place at the end of the season, plus umpteen trumped-up new competitions. With a summer free of football, I used to look forward to the start of a season with huge anticipation, but that's been lost.

Exactly the same. It's been a slow erosion over the last two decades for me. Maybe as Town haven't been on the top flight much I lost interest in MotD, however I used to know the ins and outs of the majority of the top flight squads. Nowadays when there is 50/60/70 players in a squad and a lot of them don't feature it's just become excessive. Don't even really watch England games either, however I rarely miss a Town game (TV not live as am a long way from home these days to travel weekly).

Football on TV on 09:53 - Aug 25 with 663 views | RobTheMonk | I still enjoy watching games, but I think a lot of teams are so governed by XG data, that some of the spontaneity within play has dropped. Case in point was our game against Preston. We tried the same thing over and over when what it needed was a maverick to start running straight at their back line.
Football on TV on 10:06 - Aug 25 with 619 views | Scuzzer | Agree. Why do we have to watch all though. Get up out of our comfy armchairs and do something in your community. Football on TV on 10:13 - Aug 25 with 595 views | blueoutlook | I can’t be bothered with it nowadays. I love the sport but we are saturated with it. I pick and choose a few games I watch. Mainly non PL because I’m not a fan of the guff that’s spoken about that league.

All very preachy don’t you think? And you don’t have to watch any football if you don’t wish to. I can only speak for myself, but I sometimes work long hours and then spend time with my young family which I love. My ‘me time’ tends to be either sketching, watching football on the telly or going to the gym. If you want to volunteer for things then that’s your choice but it doesn’t mean that you have more of a life than others.

I feel much like you do, EB. MInd you the False 9 goes back quite a long way. Nigel Clough was one and it could be argued that so was Teddy Sheringham.

I thought the Magnificent Magyars were the pioneers, using Nandor Hidegkuti as a "false 9" in the 1950s.

This is where we miss Facters, no doubt he would tell us that the Reverend Herbert Haste was the original false 9...

I'm conflicted on this, I took interest in the Women's Euro's (but only watched the final half hours of a couple of England games, which nevertheless had high drama) and went to our pre-season in Aberdeen, which was an excellent game and very rewarding. That being said I agree with Radlett's point about the summer break, it was a necessary palate cleanser in my opinion. I missed a football a bit on those summers but the weather was generally better, the days longer and parklife (meeting up with friends a lot in Christchurch Park) and beachlife (ah, Felixstowe) put a different complexion on life. Then early September we were hungry for the new season and stayed hungry whatever success, or lack of, occurred. Nowadays there is a danger of the lack of variety through the year sapping the appetite for the game (or even the increasing number of festivals and ways of extending those through the winter with holidays to the Med getting a roster of acts added in maybe adding the potential for too much live music into our lives.) So maybe I am getting old, but I hope to live long enough and for the forum to keep going long enough, to see MattInLondon post similar to the rest of the posts and become even more of a curmudgeon than he already appears to be...
